LA Times - Obama sees huge jump in wealth
article on page A17 in today's LA TIMES - (not a subscriber, so no link)

"At the end of 2007 his assets were worth as much as $7.35 million".

"...wealth has more than doubled during his presidential campaign - and has shot up tenfold since he entered the US Senate 3
years ago..."

All the Obama fans whining and bitching about the Clinton money ought to realize that if Obama gets in the white house as president, he too will rake it in big time, beginning with his term and escalating after he leaves the white house, just as Clinton Bill increased his wealth massively after he left the whitehouse.

It is a given in US poltics that elected presidents will emerge fabulously wealthy as a result of their having been president.

Msongs

3. Hillary lent her campaign way more than that.
$6.4 million in the last month alone, plus another $5 million from before, plus whatever she's spent in the last month.

Obama didn't get to self-finance his own campaign.

34. No, they didn't. Imagine how wealthy they'd be now, if they had.
If you want to compare, you've got to compare using equivalent criteria.

I'll bet that the Obamas, no matter what happens--win, lose, or draw--will make the Clintons look like poor folk in comparison by the time they hit their sixties. They are rich, and they WILL get richer.

8. Uhm, the problem was elitist Hillary trying to paint Obama as one.
Edited on Sat May-17-08 06:59 PM by Drunken Irishman
All the while she's raking in tons of cash.

I have no problem with her making money, however, when she props up the bullshit argument Obama is an elitist, while being the richest candidate in this race, well then yeah, that's when I have a problem.

9. Source of wealth?

Book Sales Lifted Obamas’ Income in 2007 to a Total of $4.2 Million

WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama released his 2007 tax return on Wednesday evening, reporting a household income of $4.2 million due to a sharp increase in the sales of his books during the first year of his presidential campaign.

That was a substantial jump from the roughly $1 million in income the Obamas reported in 2006, much of that also from book deals.

10. Funny, that, but I'm not a subscriber either and found the link just fine
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-money17-2008may17,0,3496427.story

Maybe because you didn't want to whole story told?

Obama's wealth does not match that of Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has loaned her campaign $11.4 million. She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have earned more than $100 million since he left office at the start of the decade. Sen. Clinton received an extension and won't file a financial disclosure statement until next month.

Nor does Obama's wealth match that of Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee. McCain's wife, Cindy, inherited her father's Anheuser-Busch distributorship in the Phoenix area. Although the McCains' holdings are separate, their family wealth is thought to be between $28 million and $100 million.

Obama's money has come largely from sales of his books, "Dreams From My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope." He's also writing a children's book. All three of the candidates have had bestsellers.

Obama's money is mostly invested conservatively in Treasury notes and bond funds, one of which was worth $1 million to $5 million, according to the forms, which require the disclosure of a range of values.

His mutual funds include so-called socially responsible funds, screened to meet certain "social and environmental criteria."

Emphasis is mine.

12. If the Clintons' income was only from their books, nobody would have complained.
Obama has one major source of income apart from his Senator's salary, and that is his books. And he wrote them himself, unlike Hillary who had a ghost writer (nothing wrong with that, but shows writing is not one of her great skills).

... it sure seems that mental malfunctions are FAR more common among the Hilldroids. Double standards, denial, projection, hypocrisy, melodrama, fallacies, sociopathy ... sheesh! So MANY of those people just can't use their brains very well. It's unreal.
