How can Obama only get 7% of the votes in some KY counties?
Edited on Tue May-20-08 07:51 PM by thewiseguy
I am absolutely shocked by looking at the returns from some counties in Kentucky. How can Obama possibly only win 7% of the vote there?

Pike County

Hillary 91% Obama 7%

Floyd County

Hillary 92% Obama 5%

Magoffin

Hillary 93% Obama 5%

Breathitt

Hillary 90% Obama 7%

Eliott

Hillary 90% Obama 7%

These counties are mostly situated in eastern Kentucky. How on earth can Obama who is pretty much the shoe in for the nominee only gets 5% of the vote in these counties?

44. In some ways it is but you have to understand...
That some blacks could just be excited about the prospects of having the first black president in office. Same thing with some women who would like to see the first female president.

I am not using a broad brush to describe either group of supporters though.

What about the whites? They are just excited to vote for the white candidate because they are excited about the prospects of having yet another white president?

Almost certainly no. Have almost all black voters voted for white candidates? Almost certainly.

73. The difference is...
that African American voters have proven solidly that they will turn out for a candidate regardless of race. Rural white voters in many of these areas haven't proven the same. If Hillary got the nod, I have no doubt you'd see a solid turnout of AA voters. I'm not necessarily sure that the same can be said for many of the voters in Kentucky voting race.

Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:29 PM by liberalcommontater
It is totally inappropriate to label an entire group with offensive language like that. That is all I was trying to say...sorry if you were offended, none intended.

Further thought...calling everyone who voted for Hillary idiot rednecks is basically saying that they voted for her because she is white and against Obama because he is black. It is saying they are racists. There is going to be a bit of that, but even so I would not claim that Obama's AA supporters are racist when they vote for him with over 90% of their votes. The racist charge or racist charges onces removed, ie idiot rednecks, are an exceedingly overused and mistaken oversimplification.

As one semi-retarded sounding, grossly obese woman said to an NBC interviewer, "It's BAHBLE!" slamming her fist on the bar she was hanging out in, to justify why no one in the county would vote Obama. They were all Republican voters in these counties, too.

What happened to those "yellow dog Democrats" in eastern Kentucky who voted for RFK?

The answer is: racism. WV and KY are the Appalachian area. They only vote for white, preferably southern males. That's just the way it is there.

More to the point...why can't someone who claims to be the only one to be a shoe-in in the GE win the all-white vote in Oregon? Or the all-white vote in Iowa? Or the white rural areas of Nevada? These are important areas for the Democrats to win in the GE.

Small matter...WV and KY frequently vote red. Obama more than makes up for this small % loss with the massive Independent support he'll have in the GE.

Sure, there can be other reasons - but race is certainly a big reason in places like KY and WV. These particular voters are really an embarrassment to this country.

and Bill campaigned there by saying that Obama supporters don't care about them. Cause all Obama supporters have jobs. This is a paraphrase, but it's nearly an exact quote. the "don't care about you" and "have jobs" parts are absolutely what he said.

unlike the Clintons, Obama doesn't try to trash Hillary when he campaigns. Or lie.

I hate the Clintons and will never vote for Hillary after the nastiness she has done in this campaign. She makes me want to vomit just to hear her speak.

75. guys also admitted, at the polls, that they wouldn't vote for a black man
which to me means they're scum. which, to me, means that a southern strategy means the democratic party has to forever pander to asshole racists. which to me means that the west and the midwest are better bets for a progressive democratic win.

the joke of it all is the state is so republican and yet so poor. the only democrat they voted for was Clinton... not even Gore, from neighboring TN. what can you say about ppl who vote against their own economic self interest?

The irony is that Obama has talked about ameri-corps sorts of program to help out ppl in areas such as these.

do you really think Clinton has a chance of winning KY in the general? I don't. frankly, I have no hope for this nation until democrats can find a way to win without worrying about the south because the south is the worst thing going in this nation and everyone knows it.

51. Ultimate example: Clay County, Ky. Per capita income $9700. Bitter poor went for Bush. TWICE.
Understandable bitterness, but stubbornly voting against their own economic interests, and will probably be voting for McCain in November is not likely to help...

2004 George W. Bush Richard Cheney Republican 5,726 74.49%
2000 George W. Bush Richard Cheney Republican 4,926 73.31%

61. PS. Did Bill or Hillary go into this county?
We know Obama didn't. I dount Bush or McCain have ever been there, either. Has ANY Pres candidate been there in decades?

Republicanism must just run in the family genes there.

She got the woman vote:

And she had the help of his brain:

And you know there are a lot of dumb people in this country:

59. Did anyone else see Chuck Todd's fascinating breakdown of the primaries based on race?
I think this was how it went:

If the state is <6% African American, it goes for Obama (with the exception of NM and AZ, due to Hispanics)

If the state is >6%, but <18% African American, it goes for Hillary

If the state is >18% African American, it goes for Obama

These rules have been followed almost to a "T". I found that fascinating. Completely depressing, but fascinating.

76. It is an ominous sign for November,
in my opinion. Let me say that I will happily vote for Senator Obama over Senator McCain.
At the same time, I think you have identified an outlier that actually points to serious concern for November.

according to one piece that I read, were voting for her at about the same rate that African Americans have been voting for Obama (90%).

90. Interesting comparison 2004/2008 JK/* & BO/HRC in KY
When you look at the 2004 election map with Kerry/*. The counties which went heavily in HRC favor tonight were counties that went for Kerry in 2004. Interesting?
