You know what's really misogynist?
For all the various cries of misogyny (99.9% of which in this campaign were based on hairsplitting and word parsing to find it where it didn't exist), the most misogynist thing is letting Hillary (and some of her supporters) browbeat us into playing "nice-nice" to avoid being called "sexist".

I've tried being nice and tried offering olive branches, but honestly, I am tired of getting my hand slapped with a ruler every time I have the audacity to wonder what Hillary is really playing at when she obviously isn't going to be our nominee.

You know what? I'm sorry. I don't like Hillary. I think she's power hungry, elitist, phony, selfish, sleazy, underhanded, low rent, lying, destructive, arrogant, and sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard when she talks.

I will vote for her if she is the nominee (of the Democratic party, that is), but I just realized that we are being played for fools by the Hillary camp. They expect us to defer to Hillary and avoid offending her "base", but they aren't willing to extend the same courtesy to those who support Obama and worse, they threaten us with their vote.

It's possibly one of the reasons we've lost so many races in the last couple of decades is that we let this tactic work too many times. We allow ourselves to have our hands tied behind us to avoid offending the other side (whether it's the other side of the primary or the republican party) and let them whittle away at us with the most outrageous behaviors and accusations.

Normally, we don't see this kind of tactic used within the party contests itself, but we need to recognize it.

This has to stop.

1. A-freakin-men!
You said it perfectly.

We learned that we need to stand up to the thug tactics of the Republicans, and we need to stand up to Karl Rove's little pet, Hillary.

10. Yes. I have to agree.
I'm perfectly willing to be civil. I'm willing to recognize the passion of the Clinton supporters, and admire that in them. I'm willing to agree when true sexism rears its head (and it does happen). Strangely, however, defending my candidate seems to mean I'm being a bully. Or daring to point out the racism that's every bit as much a part - if not more - of this campaign is a big fat no-no.

I'm tired of being told that as the probable winner is our candidate that we need to shut up. Why? I'm not talking about in-your-face crowing, but why do we need to hide our feelings?

It just surely seems to be that there's some sort of twisted logic going on here, and it's not helping women and it's not helping African Americans and it's not helping the Democratic party - and most of all, it's not helping this country.

12. You SO said what I have been thinking all day. Why is it that Barack cannot celebrate in this
moment, but if it were Hillary, the balloons would be dropping. She is threatening him, not uniting the party. And I for one don't appreciate how he is being "kept in his place" by threats of upsetting her supporters. What about his supporters? I think this tactic is demeaning and divisive.

16. That's true. We've even be told to keep our celebration "low key".....
....and let Hillary "have her moment".

Then to top things off, when she does win any kind of victory (mostly in places she was expected to do well in), we get endless "Boo-ya! In your face Obamascum! She's keeping up the fight!", but if we the temerity to win in places we are doing well in, we are supposed to be all humble pie and defer to Her Highness.

Well, bugger that!

29. everyone keeps talking about how she has to 'process this' and
figure it out. a mature person, someone who respected the game and the principles involved would have stopped a ways back down the road. No, she is simpering on, everyone has to be 'careful of the girl' and the whole country is harmed.

15. I don't think its elitist to want a leader who doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator
I want a leader who inspires us to be better than what we are today,

and not one who takes their cue from the folks of yesterday.

Why should my leader or I be guided by the intolerant and uniformed?

19. Couldn't have said it better. This election is truly about change. Do we hold on to the past
divisions, fears, and strongholds, or do we embrace a better America that looks forward and works together for what is best for all...this will be the election that will answer that question loud and clear. I, for one, know what my choice is.

23. Stick her all you want.
As long as you vote for the candidate who is on the democratic ticket, we are still on the same side, but don't expect me to pretend I am not enjoying watching Obama snatch that trophy away by not campaigning until long after the race started.

She fucked up. There is either one of two things that happened here.

1) Clinton didn't realize there was going to be some work involved in this until it was far too late for her to do anything, in which case, that's a piss poor argument for making her our candidate.

OR

2) Clinton just wasn't that great a candidate to begin with which allowed someone who with less name recognition, no coattails to ride on, that has a "Muslim sounding name" to be a better choice to the people voting in primaries and caucuses.

Pick one. But don't expect me to defer to Hillary who has snatched defeat from what should have been an easy victory.

25. In some cases these attitudes actually help to CREATE the behaviors they condemn.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:04 PM by casus belli
I have seen a lot of backlash sexism from people who were perfectly rational to begin with until they had been called sexist one too many times. I think false cries of sexism, racism, - any -ism really - has the potential to actually create the behavior in some cases.

It's like this: you let someone know that certain words offend you - opening up a weakness for them to exploit. Inevitably, if you insult them well enough, they use the word not because they necessarily believe it is an apt description, but because they KNOW it bothers you and they want to hit you where it hurts. It's like saying "Whatever you do, don't call me a XXXX, you racist/sexist homophobic POS". "Sure, whatever you say XXXX."

It's a downward spiral that unfortunately distracts from the very real cases of sexism/racism, etc that we should be concentrating on.
