12. tells you that those voters are probably more honest with poll takers.
whenever i see polls about church going i laugh because you know a good number of the people answering are lying out of their asses because they don't want the poll taker to think they're a godless heathen.

yay for you Oregon and your honest answers.

17. OR is one of the most "unchurched" states.
I used to attend the Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, and the priest told me that he was so surprised when he first moved there, because when new people would join the congregation, it was often not just a matter of explaining the denomination to them, but explaining Christianity! But he ended up loving that, because they came with no preconceptions or biases, and were there by choice, not because of family history or pressure. And they had no problem challenging or rejecting anything about the church they didn't agree with.

In my experience, people in WA and OR tend to be spiritual, but not necessarily religious in a conventional sense.

To give you some idea of how even "churched" people can be here, I asked this priest how he felt about homosexuality, he shrugged and said: "A hole's a hole." LOL!

And there is a woman priest there who is called the Canon Pastor. She says she's the canon without balls.

26. A man here in Illinois told me of his priest getting married
Edited on Wed May-21-08 08:41 AM by mac2
and telling his congregation after that. He was outraged.

I agree that the priest has a right to get married (but not by the Vatican) if he wants but should have discussed it with the members first.

There would be a lot less problems with clergy in the Catholic church if they were allowed to marry. The whole reformation was over their corruption and not allowing people such as Martin Luther to marry. There is also a shortage of clergy since our world is more modern regarding our rights, etc. The American Catholics have talked of separation because of divorce, birth control, and clergy marriage but as of yet it hasn't happened.

18. If you ever read the book called Freethinkers by Jacobs
you will find that in times of religious extremism churches lose members. It has happened previously in this country.

If you look at the last census 2000 it lists church membership of all groups. The RWers aren't as large as everyone thinks. Like Nazi Germany the RWers were a small group. They had money and power behind them that's how they succeeded.

Only 25% go to church every Sunday and they are mostly women. Men go less often.

I don't think many churches would even be open if it weren't for Faith Based tax dollars in their coffers...billions of it. Bush needs them to control the masses and keep them in line. He pays them off to silence them with our tax dollars. You don't bit the hand that feeds you sort of thing. I call it religious cronyism.

Today on CSPAN I saw a Democrat called Scott (GA I think) taking about Jesus. It made me angry...in the people's house. How dare he? This is a Democrat who hasn't read his Constitution or Bible.

Acting like the clergy should be part of government is just playing a dangerous game. History has proven that over and over.

23. I don't know if you'll find a higher percentage that do not
I did some checking in other exit polls and couldn't find another state so "unchurched".

I wasn't making any conclusions, just thought I'd toss it up for discussion.
