34. Ain't necessarily so. McCain is Oregon's type of republican.
He's moderate, secular and a "maverick." Remember, we have the only republican senator on the west coast (Gordon Smith).

Bush came close here in 2000
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0876793.html

and lost by a few points in 2004
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/OR/P/00/

and Rasmussen shows McCain beating Hillary in Oregon.

69. That's absolutely true.
Portland is liberal, but the state is not that liberal. Oregonians just don't like populist fake fundy panderers like Bush. McCain will do very well here. I'm hoping that the combination of Obama's popularity here and the huge level of anger against Bush will keep us in the blue column.

37. But theyre "liberal elitists" and that is the KEY group excluded from the "hard working white" group
It is not whether you are white or not, it is whether you are "hard working white" i.e. a friend and enabler to
"undeserving minorities".

"Liberal elitists" to anyone using the term, essentially means "homosexuals and people who coddle n----s".

That is the actual meaning of the phrase for the Reagan Dems who Clinton is appealing to.

I have seen the visceral fear in my own (ultra liberal, Obama supporting) town to anyone who breaks the
unspoken bond of class hypocrisy and actually fights for the interests of poor minorities. You are
implicitly branded a class traitor (race being merely a sufficient indicator of caste) and blackballed
by the homeowners.

It is a brilliant example of Tory fake populism employed to break down and divide the underclass to
defend the interests of the ruling class by singling out a group for approbation and redirecting their
anger against the "elite" to ONLY THOSE IN SOCIETY WHO ARE "COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO IGNORE" the competition
for resources between the "white working class" and the "undeserving poor".

Maine is actually at the top end of the Appalachian mountains but we went for Obama. No one seems to care about us. Everyone thinks that only places like WV and Kentucky count. Why should they? Haven't they heard tdhat "As Maine goes, so goes the nation"?!!!!

It's those southern Appalachian states that are terrified of the big scary black man.

84. Hmmm.... Interesting thought, but I'm not sure I agree.
As a native Oregonian, I've come across a goodly number of folk who've given up the potential for greater economic success in somewhere such as the SF Bay Area in order to stay in places like Canby and Klamath Falls.

I also know an awful lot of college-educated young 'uns working in low-wage office jobs (think "the copy guy") in Portland rather than take better paying jobs in other cities. Despite their degrees (and perhaps because of them given the student loan burden they are usually carrying), they generally rent small apartments and can't afford to marry and raise families. Frequently, they don't own cars. I'd guess they make less money and pay higher rents than union workers in rust belt states.

My home state voted overwhelmingly for Barack H. Obama. They also want Bush/Cheney impeached. And my home city, Brattleboro, voted to arrest, imprison and try Bush/Cheney as war criminals if they ever came there. I guess we are the Coastal elite that the Rethugs keep talking about... except our coast is Lake Champlaine. But with less than 1,000,000 population we don't count...
