Obama Faces Uphill Climb vs. McCain Among White Voters
May 21, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee, will likely enter the general election with more of a handicap among white voters than would have been the case if Hillary Clinton had been the nominee, based mainly on Clinton's stronger performance among white women.

9. I'd Have To Look At The Numbers Really Hard
But I don't think Obama or any Democrat can win with 38% of the white vote no matter how strong the African American vote is...We are only talking about 12.8% of the population...

22. 42% Is On The Cusp
Edited on Wed May-21-08 10:50 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Depends on the Latino vote...

But that really wasn't my point...A Democrat needs at least 42% of the white vote to win...

Kerry got 41% of the white vote, 88% of the African American vote and still lost:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/US/P/00/epolls.0.html

Also, if you notice African American comprised 11% of the electorate...If they were to vote at their exact percentage of the population they would comprise 12.8% of the electorate... That nets you about one and one half more percentage points...

The key is the Latino vote...Bill Clinton got 72% of the Latino vote in 96...If Kerry approximated that he would have won...

29. OK, I'll play.
Want unity? Then offer the person who won half of the Democratic vote the VP position. I don't know if she wants it or not, but it should at least be offered.

If there's not even an offer, I won't buy the "unity" B.S.

see my other post (# 19) to recount just a few delights of a McCain presidentcy.

Dems voted for their preference out of 2 good candidates, and there can only be one winner- the supporters of the "loser" should not betray democratic principles and issues because they are disappointed. My entire family support Hillary, a few are diehard. My brother-in-law spent $2,000 on tix to the Elton John MSG fundraiser for Clinton, for example. But ALL (including my 76 year-old mother who LOVES Hillary) will vote for Obama UNCONDITIONALLY, should he prevail. That is the kind of loyalty to our party and future that should be expected, and not a pity-party for what could have been.

Any HRC supporters who want to take their toys and go home if they don't have it their way, well, to use the new GOP slogan, you will "get the change you deserve". That change will be President McCain, who we can expect to expand our military involvement in the ME.

36. Obama or Clinton will probably be the next President. But the Democrats must unite....
....and that has to happen at the convention - at the latest...!

There will be no "unity" without all 50 state delegations and the others being seated.

19. Do you seriously think (white) Dems will flock to McCain?
Will the thought of a McCain-chosen Supreme Court Justice and likely reversal of Roe vs. Wade rally Dems to McCain? How about his enthusiastic support of the "surge" and maintaining a military presence in Iraq as far as the eye can see? Or the fact that the non-parisan Children's Defense Fund Action COuncil rated mcCain "Worst Senator for Childresn" - see thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6041984&mesg_id=6041984 The GE has not yet begun... there is a lot to work with. If the Repubs want to get "personal" with Obama's family or associations, McCain (and his marital track record, his seeking the endorsement of the anti-Catholic Rev. Hagee) will get serious blowback from Dem. activists. And McCain is his own worst enemy- like not understanding who the real leader of Iran is- see: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6040781&mesg_id=6040781

Hillary's negatives are extremely high; higher than Obama's, she will not attract post-Operation Chaos Repubicans or Independents, and in a GE she would unite the GOP like nothing or no one else could.... this has been laregely ignored by the MSM.

Politics aside, I hope you are enjoying this lovely day in Hoboken!

31. I don't believe white Republicans are flocking to him either...
The GOP is crashing and burning before our eyes, all Democrats need to do is unite behind our nominee. Race and gender are silly things to throw an election away over.

The Republican party is fracturing over substance...

26. Which is why black voters are ALWAYS critical in putting together Dem victories...
Bill Clinton didn't get the majority of the white vote. Even in 1996, at the height of Clinton's popularity, Bob Dole still got more votes from whites than Bill did.

And notice that Hillary actually doesn't poll that much better among whites than Obama -- despite her habit of resorting to "I'm one of you" "hard-working white Americans" rhetoric.

35. So? More people live in this nation than white people.
Or women, for that matter. I'm more than a little sick of all this angst over the sacred white vote, especially the bigoted white voters of former slave states who refuse to join the twentieth century, let alone the one we are living in.
