D.C. Journalist Joins Obama Campaign

Linda Douglass, currently at National Journal, will leave the magazine to become a traveling press secretary and adviser to Senator Barack Obama, Ms. Douglass said today, part of an expanding team gearing up for a likely general election battle with Senator John McCain.

The news was first posted this morning by Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic.com.

Before joining National Journal, Ms. Douglass had spent decades in television news, starting at network affiliates in Los Angeles and then moving on to become a Washington correspondent at CBS News and then, until 2006, at ABC News.

The move is certain to add to the perception that Mr. Obama has enjoyed uncommonly good relations with the news media – a perception that has also been attached to Senator John McCain, who has called reporters “my base.”

In an interview this afternoon, Ms. Douglass said she did not believe she was indicative of a larger trend.

“I think my former colleagues in the press have been quite tough on him and I think they’ve done good strong enterprise reporting,” she said. “I don’t think anybody’s been given a pass this year.”

“I’ve covered government and politics all my life,” she said. “I just thought I couldn’t possibly sit on the sidelines any more.”

She said she would start up sometime next week.
