Obama-mania lands in Florida (Debbie Wasserman Schultz whining)
Obama-mania lands in Florida

The Barack Obama '08 campaign's much-anticipated 3-day return to Florida kicked off in Tampa with a rowdy rally of 15,000 supporters Wednesday, and then moved on to the Orlando area with an event at the Kissimmee Civic Center, before wrapping up their first day with a private fundraiser in Maitland. The campaign heads to south Florida, Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, we heard from Ms. Debbie W.:

Wasserman Schultz: Obama "really disappointing"

Clinton supporter Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz calls it "really disappointing" that Barack Obama didn't talk about Florida's votes in Tampa.

"He spoke to 15,000 Floridians today...and said absolutely nothing about whether he thinks Florida's delegation should be seated," she said in an interview on Fox News.

No, Debbie. YOU are the disappointment. Take your sanctimonious and dubious loyalty elsewhere.

Miami Herald

May 21, 2008

KISSIMMEE – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama had three words Wednesday for critics who say he’ll have trouble winning over Hispanics in the nation’s largest swing state: Si, se puede.

Obama used the Spanish version of his popular “Yes, we can” slogan to greet the crowd of more than 600 supporters at a town hall meeting at the Kissimmee Civic Center Tuesday night.

“We’re going to bring the party together,” Obama said. “We need to realize the problems we face are not problems of one party or one people.”

During his 20-minute speech, Obama focused on bread-and-butter issues, like middle class tax credits, higher teacher pay and college scholarship programs for teachers and young adults who volunteer. And he touched on the confusion over Florida’s delegates by saying he was sure they would be counted.

.....

Some supporters arrived hours early to wait in the afternoon sun, creating a line that stretched for blocks. Dozens came from the area’s Hispanic community, with some supporters donning buttons and tee-shirts proclaiming “Si se puede.”

Hispanic supporters who attended the town hall meeting dismissed comments that Obama would have trouble winning over the state’s Hispanics during the general election.

“I know with all the people in my family, we’re 100 percent with him,” said Norin Mercado, 63, an Orlando schoolteacher who was born in Puerto Rico. “I know I like him. And I’m with him.”

Si, se puede.

14. Caught the flash going off on someone's camera behind him.
Lot's of professional/press photographers take shots in quick succession, hoping to catch folks with their eyes open (not blinking) and in just the right pose. In the days of film it was motor drives. With digital, it's memory.

I can only remotely imagine what she's feeling. (I'm not one to get that way myself ... but I enjoy seeing the genuine feelings in others - not 'rock star' stuff, though.)

19. Hillary received a large portion of her votes due to early voting...
If CA had not allowed for early voting, I am convinced that Obama would have done better. The CA, NY, MA primaries were earlier on when very few people knew who Obama was. The same is true for FL and MI. I am confident that if a revote took place, Obama would beat Hillary.

i love puerto rico
it was in my experience one of the few places race is discounted
as a result a family runs the full human spectrum
at family gatherings i was blessed to attend there i was always quietly impressed by this simple fact

26. Puerto Rico is full of mixed-race people.
Sure 80% call themselves white, but in truth, there are only like 55-60% that are white (read: of European/Spaniard descent). The rest are mixed with African and Taino ancestry.

Obama can relate to Puerto Ricans and speaks to issues that are important to them, like higher wages for teachers (the teachers' union is the largest union in PR).

The more people get to know him, the greater his support grows.

23. During the interview with WFLA, Obama corrected them. He said he was following party rules.
The interviewer asked if he were sorry he had boycotted Florida. Obama said, oh wait a minute, then he said he was following the rules set out for him by the party.

He said also in the interview he would like to see the delegates seated.

When asked about CentCom, which is in Tampa, he lit into Bush's mistakes in foreign policy.

27. That's how Bob Graham described it: Obama was following DNC rules.. NOT ignoring Floridians.
''Sen. Obama doesn't need to buy a condominium in Florida, but he needs to spend a lot of time here,'' said former Sen. Bob Graham, who has not endorsed either Democratic candidate. ``He has to show his interest in Florida and that his failure to be here was not an act of rudeness but an act of complying with the rules.''

49. Just heard on Randi Rhodes, 3:40 EDT, May 22:
Obama's meeting at the synagogue in Boca Raton, originally scheduled today at noon, has been pushed back later into this afternoon/evening because Obama's vote was needed on the passage of the GI bill today.

Randi reported that he flew back to DC to vote, while stating that he would be flying back to Florida immediately after the vote, keeping his word to meet with these Floridians.

(Did Clinton vote on the GI bill today, or is she too busy meeting with her operatives in filing today's lawsuit against the DNC to seat Florida's delegates?)
