Of course she tells that to Telemundo and needs votes in Puerto Rico. Strange how I haven't heard her say this before when she was campaigning in Appalachia.

who vote against Black people anymore. Then Montana and South Dakota. Notice no more Appalachian areas left.

51. Um...most Puerto Ricans are not mixed with African.....

According to the 2000 U.S. Census there were almost four million inhabitants. Eighty percent of Puerto Ricans described themselves as "white"; 8% as "black"; 12% as "mulatto" and 0.4% as "American Indian or Alaska Native".

A recent study of Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 800 individuals found 61.1% as having Amerindian maternal mtDNA, 26.4% as having African maternal mtDNA, and 12.5% as having Caucasian maternal mtDNA. Conversely, patrilineal input, as indicated by the Y chromosome, showed that 70% of all Puerto Rican males have inherited Y chromosome DNA from a male European ancestor, 20% have inherited Y chromosome DNA from a male African ancestor, and fewer than 10% have inherited Y chromosome DNA from a male Amerindian ancestor.

2. To be fair there is racism in the Latino community where people who
have darker skin have more problems with discrimination from people in their own community.

That said I agree she should have said this before her elections in Appalachia.

58. It exists in the black & Mexican community..would Obama be as acceptable if he were darker?
Edited on Thu May-22-08 10:17 AM by Doityourself
In the slave days, the "lighter-skinned" black got to work in the house and was given favorable treatment. At one time, African ancestry was prevalent in Mexico, but that too changed. White and/or light is considered better. The darker, the more evil or unacceptable for the mainstream, and in many ways that still exists today. There was a study with little black girls...given the chance to choose a white doll or a black one, most chose the white doll! Spike Lee dealt with it in a couple of his movies too.

Would Barack Obama be as acceptable and/or embraced if his skin was a darker hue or if he was jet black?

Skin Tone Study Reveals Preference for Light-Skinned Employees.

Barack Obama and Soledad O'brien discussed it on BET back in Decemeber 2007. NPR disccussed their discussion too...

Most Americans, and even many Mexicans, don't realize that a significant fraction of the Mexican population once looked markedly African. At least 200,000 black slaves were imported into Mexico from Africa. By 1810, Mexicans who were considered at least part-African numbered around a half million, or more than 10 percent of the population.

68. There are 2 concepts: "mejorar la raza" / "atrasar la raza"
It's not brought up in polite company, but the issue of improving the race (marrying someone lighter-skinned or White), or going backwards is still very much under the surface.

Both in Latin American and in India, major corporations (such as L'Oreal, Unilever, Ponds) sell skin-lightening products. It's not at all taboo, in fact it's quite the norm.

80. Those are good points
The internal racism and world pressure to be more white is incredible. In Colombia, where I spent some time, all the models and actresses are light skinned. Colombia has a very mixed pallet of skin colors, many negros, cafe, morenos, etc. But the Presidents and people in power are light skinned. The Afrocolombianos in the Choco region have a history of displacement and violence against them even after slavery. It's a world epidemic.

But you don't really think she's showing integrity do you? She uses racists when she needs to, then when they are done voting she moves on to the next group. Back in the day she was telling voters they could vote based on anything they wanted to...even the color of the candidates hair.

Its going to be over soon anyway so she's in go for broke mode.

I saw an interview with Donald Trump last night and he gave his opinion on several of the candidates who he knows well, such as Giuliani, Romney and Hillary. He said that Hillary had done a lot of work in NY on civil rights.

The Clintons are not racist and it's highly offensive when they are being portrayed as such by some of their fellow Democrats.

83. Yea well I believe they are racist
And I really don't care if you take offense to that. Hillary should be able to win on her own merits; I mean she is so great and all. All this buzz code and buzz talk about :white working class" And you really have some room to talk about offensive. I mean really this coming from someone putting down the people of OR and WA as latte drinking elitist just because they were smart enough not to vote for Hillary. Really, you people want your cake and eat it too. You want to talk about the elitist and latte drinkers, the people who are the true activist and back bone of this country (they are called Liberals btw )but take offense when people call Hillbilly out on their race baiting. As I said before I don't care if you take offense. Do you want to know what else is offensive?Calling yourself a dem and talking down about WA state and OR. You won't find more dedicated, socially conscious people as you would in the great city of Seattle. Yea they like their coffee but they also give a damn about the environment, the homeless, the war and an entire host of pressing matters that are effecting our country today. I believe the Clintons are racist, yea I said it and I don't feel bad about it. I also don't feel less than a liberal for stating my opinion.

Why is it OK for 9 out of 10 AA to vote for Obama, but it's wrong when 6 out of 10 whites vote for Hillary? Did it ever occur to you that they may vote for her because she's the best qualified person for the job?

No, I guess not.........

Not everything is about race. Personally, I couldn't care less if he's white, black or purple. I just don't think he's prepared enough to be president.

54. It's worse
The racist can grow, understand how their environment might have misled them and acknowledge that they were wrong, work to repair or offset any harm they have caused. They can be forgiven.

Those who use racism and exacerbate racial division cause the same harm as racists themselves, but they have no excuse. This is much less forgivable.

40. She Was Coerced Into Saying This Because Of David Gergen's Comments........
Tuesday night on CNN. I think his comments made her look real bad.

I think her campaign decided she had to say this - so that if the race thing is brought up - she has some cover to say - I did say that I didn't want those votes if they were voting for me only because he's black.

At some point in the future people will forget that she said this with only three primaries left to go. And she'll make the claim to have them think she said this from the start.

She would not be doing this. David Gergen's suggestion has nothing to do with it. She's been playing race politics all along from state to state and the strategy evolves. This doesn't make her a racist; it makes her a politician. This is the stance that suits Puerto Rico. But I suspect the next thing we will hear is a demand for Obama to say the same thing in terms of gender.

57. If she believed this
then just like a person with the courage of her strong convictions would, she would have flat out stated it before WV and KY. That is a guarantee.

Hearing her do it now just means she wants "credit" for "standing up" for the right thing at some future point - like if she runs again in 2012 or 2016. She will do as she has been doing - pretend to dumber than dirt voters that she actually said this BEFORE those states elections, and then just laugh at or challenge anyone who tries to say otherwise. It is a pattern.

because he had served his purpose.

69. I stand corrected. I have not seen the TV today.
Did she say this in Spanish?

If she said it in english, I wonder if we can play this over and over to the Kentucky and W Va voters.

Edited on Thu May-22-08 11:48 AM by SoonerPride
airing today.

The excerpts were leaked to MSNBC who commented on the contents earlier today.

Once the interview airs, it will be widely available.

Not until then.

Understand how news work now?

Good.

84. so she is telling the brown folks
to keep their racism in check but she forgot to tell her white working class base the same? This woman is beyond disgusting. Hillary is smart enough to know that racism works on many different levels. There are colorist issues in most cultures where the people are people of color and and yes there is racism. She knows exactly what she is doing but personally I have gotten to the point where I don't give a damn what she says anymore. You cannot believe a word that comes out of her mouth and her race baiting ways have lost her all kinds of respect from me, so I don't really care. What is so funny is at the end of the day her ass will be sitting on the curb fighting to keep her Senate seat and the skinny black guy she tried to stop will be working his way to the white house. All her supporters that did vote against Obama because of his race ( and yes there are quite a few of them in her base) can share a Jack Daniels with her and talk about the good ol days when the negroes knew their place. She is irrelevant to me at this point.
