I've been thinking about our national priorities

I believe that the lust for defense spending from the MIC is because of the profit therein.

America's human citizens put their lives on the line for defense of the country.
America's corporate citizens should be required to put their bottom line on the line for the defense of the country.

If defense spending was unprofitable for the companies involved....I think that we might see a dividend in improved allocation of resources in our country.

Defense contracts should not be cost plus...they should be pure variable costs (not including overhead) with overruns the responsibility of the company holding the contract not the citizens.
