How can Obama win California in the GE when he lost it in the primaries?
This is how...

http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/campaign-2008/2008/05/22/new-poll-finds-big-shift-toward-obama.html

A new poll released today in California finds political momentum shifting dramatically toward Barack Obama—and away from both Hillary Clinton and John McCain—in the nation's most populous state. According to a survey conducted over the past 10 days by the Public Policy Institute of California, 59 percent of likely voters here now have a "favorable" impression of Democrat Obama, while a majority view both of the other candidates unfavorably. In a state whose Democratic primary Clinton won in February, 51 percent of voters now say they have an unfavorable opinion of her; 53 percent of voters feel the same way about Republican McCain.

Obama, meanwhile, seems to be making strides across nearly every constituency. If the general election were held today, 54 percent of Californians say they would vote for him, compared with 37 percent for McCain. That gap has widened by 8 points since March. Obama enjoys the support of more than 80 percent of Democrats here, along with over half (55 percent) of independents. He leads McCain among men and women and is viewed favorably by nearly 70 percent of Latinos—a powerful political group, experts note, not just in California but in several other western states, including Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada.

1. This Effect, Sir, Will Show Up All Over The Country
The overwhelming proportion of voters in the Democratic primary will vote in November for the Party's nominee.

7. Here's a story for you, Sir.
While filling up my gas tank this afternoon, I and every other customer at the tanks was wretching and heaving about the price. It was the first time we hit the $3.99 9/10 mark here in Cincinnati. An impromptu discussion ensued.

A gentleman, senior citizen driving a late-model minivan, said to me, "I need to get me one of those."

I nodded and said, "Yes, it really does get good mileage, even though it now costs me $43.00 to fill up." (I drive a 2000 Acura Integra.)

"No," he said. "One of those." And he pointed to my bumper, and my "Obama '08" sticker.

Events will conspire and Americans will unite. I feel it in my bones. To live in the wingnut bastion of Cincinnati, and to have an older gentleman willing to enthusiastically declare his support for an African-American Democratic candidate is nothing short of earth-shaking in my experience.

2. Losing a state in the primaries has no bearing on the GE.
Regardless of any poll. Of course it was nice to see Obama leading :)

6. Absolutely meaningless!
And when Hillary finally, finally drops out of this prolonged dem contest, we will see how meaningless these polls continue to be to what will occur in the GE.

who suggests that Obama can't win an obviously Blue State just because he didn't win the primary.

23. An alternative to throttling
Obama won the Democratic primary in Utah, but McCain lost the Republican primary.

So, just offer to bet the person on how Utah will go in November (with you, of course, betting on McCain, the loser of the primary). This will indicate whether the other person is sincerely deluded (and about to enrich you) or is merely mouthing talking points.

By the way, as background on Utah's recent votes: Bush beat Gore 67-27, and beat Kerry 71-26. I have a sneaky feeling that McCain will find a way to pull this one out. Your money should be reasonably safe.

28. As an attorney, and an officer of the court, I'm not supposed to advise illegal actions
On the other hand, I'm not licensed to practice law in Wisconsin. For all I know, throttling is legal there. So I'm not offering any formal opinion on what you should do about such annoying pests, who, from at least one perspective, so richly deserve throttling, if not worse, and, what's more, have only themselves to blame....

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

9. Guessing that if Calif still held primary in June, results would be radically different
Now that HRC has exposed her obsession over reason, party, country, I doubt she would pull much in Calif now.

18. Also conversely winning a red state does not equal victory there in the GE.
Obama will be fine in blue states like CA, NY & NJ. He will not put NE in play.

The states I was a little worried about were PA, OH & FL and his numbers there seem to be climbing.

20. Actually he could get an electoral vote from NE
Edited on Thu May-22-08 03:57 PM by PM7nj
Nebraska and Maine both split their electoral votes. Obama could get 1 or 2 of Nebraska's electoral votes out of Omaha. Kerry came close to doing it in 2004 and Obama currently isn't running too far behind McCain there.

27. I live in Omaha.. and YES HE CAN
Obama has a better shot than any other dem ever has of getting 1 or 2 of our Electoral Votes. We usually swing all the way over for the Repugs - but this year may be different. Twice now - my vote may actually count!
