Obama Response to Latest McCain Attack
I am proud to stand with Senator Webb and a bipartisan coalition to give our veterans the support and opportunity they deserve. It's disappointing that Senator McCain and his campaign used this issue to launch yet another lengthy personal, political attack instead of debating an honest policy difference. He should know that this is not about John McCain or Barack Obama – it's about giving our veterans a real chance to afford four years of college without harming retention. Senator Webb's bipartisan bill will do this, and the bill that John McCain supports would not. These endless diatribes and schoolyard taunts from the McCain campaign do nothing to advance the debate about what matters to the American people.

5. Excellent response to a clumsy attack.
You can see McCain fall back to tried and true GOP tactics when he gets his feathers a bit ruffled.

8. question
I misunderstood what Obama's initial comments on the Senate floor were. Weren't they just this?

"I respect sen. John McCain's service to our country. He is one of those heroes of which I speak. But I can't understand why he would line up behind the President in his opposition to this GI bill.
I can't believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him and the President more on this issue. There are many issues that lend themselves to partisan posturing but giving our veterans the chance to go to college should not be one of them."

and those were the "cheap shots" that McCain referred to?

Michelle Bernard was just on David Gregory saying that Obama "attacked McCain for not supporting the GI bill and implied that he was unpatriotic for not doing so." Uhhhh.. I know that Bernard is a conservative, but did Obama really imply that McCain was unpatriotic? She said that they had a lot of back and forth today, so maybe I missed that specific "implication". They showed the response from McCain in which he implied (actually, said it rather bluntly) that Obama didn't care about veterans and was just doing so for campaign posturing.

11. McCain got caught not supporting the troops.
Edited on Thu May-22-08 05:18 PM by americanstranger
Obama called him on it, and Gramps responded by pointing out that Obama never served in the military. Petty and stupid.

Bernard's analysis is blockheaded. The bottom line here is that McCain sided with Bush again, and he realized that it was a monumental fuckup only after he cast his 'no' vote. And Obama only looks better because his comeback to McCain's response was as on-point and relevant as McCain's was ham-handed.

This vote by McCain was a gigantic misstep. He deserves to be beaten about the head with it every day between now and Election Day. How dare he not support the troops?

I hate when Rachel Maddow tries to talk, but David Gregory asks someone else. She combats these lies so swiftly. The Republican strategist on right now is also a joke. They asked her about Hagee and McCain's medical file dump, and she said "Well, no, I think he's just acting presidential as OPPOSED to Barack Obama, who is not under scrutiny!" Um, McCain, scrutiny? I don't think I've ever heard those two uttered in the same sentence.

McCain didn't even show up for the vote. He was in California doing a fundraiser. His own "SAN FRANcisco" moment, lol. Seriously. If they can attack us for our California fundraiser, we should be able to attack them for his. I'm sure it was full of BUSHies, McCain can't raise money on his own. And strangely, Bush can. Yuck.

12. Exactly. The usual unthinking Bush position.
This bill will probably get more people signing up for service, since they'll actually be getting something back for their time served - even if it is only for one hitch.

As usual, Bush and Gramps don't see that getting more people to join the service beats trapping the guys who are there via stop-loss by a country mile.

15. Response served several purposes: brought discussion back to issue....
at hand (veterans' benefits) and derailed McCain's Red Herring Express, called McCain on his ham-fisted attack, and shamed McCain for turning the veterans' desperate need for adequate benefits into a cheap political attack.

Obama is efficient with his resources, that's for sure. And when he calls someone on their bullshit, they stayed called.

21. On "Morning Joe" yesterday, during Senator Webb's segment...
... Mike Barnicle told him a story that broke my heart. It was about a young Marine he knew, who had completed two tours of duty in Iraq. When he came home, and entered reserve status, he fulfilled a lifetime dream by entering college.

It didn't take long for the Marine to realize he could barely afford the short-term loan he'd taken out, and certainly wouldn't be able to afford the payments on a larger student loan. To make ends meet, he decided to join.... the National Guard. He's scheduled for an Iraq tour later this summer.

It just really drove home the importance of Webb's bill. And why elections matter.

McCain tried to turn it all into a bio war. Dude, IT'S NOT FUCKING ABOUT YOU. I respect his service and everything, but I don't fucking care about your pearl harbor/grandfather story that you've told a bunch of times. I'd prefer to hear about your bill and why it is better than Webb's bill. And bullshit "supporting the Webb bill would have been politically expedient." Who is he fooling? McCain's response was long and beligerant, and Obama's was concise and rational. Plus, isn't it kind of elitist to suggest that people who don't serve in the military cannot care about the troops (before anyone responds, YES, I know that Republicans do this to Democrats all of the time. But it's still elitist).
