6. This is horrible!
I just don't even know what to say.

From link: Snip-
he country has also seen a disturbing throwback to the 1980s apartheid-era lynching tactic of "necklacing," which was widely used in the townships at the time.

Used on suspected informants, the "necklace" is a car tire, filled with petrol, put around the person's neck and set alight.

The victims are mainly immigrants and refugees from other parts of Africa, including Zimbabwe, where a devastated economy has sent at least two million people across the border in search of a better life.

Some say the attacks stem from a long-standing feeling among locals that the number of immigrants in South Africa results in shortages of jobs and essential needs.

Inadequate housing, a lack of running water and electricity, the rising prices of food, and escalating crime -- nearly 20,000 people were slain in South Africa last year -- add to the resentment.

52. Are you that pathetic of a human being
that you refuse to even listen to something that is happening outside of your cubicle?

This needs to be known. We should be reading stories like this, discussing them, brainstorming, starting letterwriting campaigns, email campaigns, etc. We should be doing something about this.

If all you do is tell the person in the cubicle next to you at work about this story or send your sister the link then you have done something! You've opened up another person's eyes and hopefully in turn they will tell someone else.

Awareness is the first course taken to end a situation like this. The shitty comment you made above tells me you'd prefer to keep your head in the sand and pretend that this never happened anywhere.

63. I just don't understand the mentality behind this.
Disagree all you want about our political system and the candidates involved but why, oh why would someone demand that we "igSnore" thousands of persons who are at risk of death and disfigurement? (Disfigurement if they manage to survive.)

We diss Republicans all day long on here yet most of them would at least react in a humane way upon hearing this story. They may not do much about it but you can bet they'd bring it up around the water cooler or at church on Sunday, if only to say that they're lucky to be Americans. Having a supposed liberal demand to "igSnore" a human rights violation is deplorable behavior at best.

If persons so callous are the "future" of the Dem party I fear for its future.

43. I posted this yesterday. It is, once again, validated:
"We live in a day and age when world leaders can threaten to cut off the heads of all the homosexuals in their country; where women still have limbs chopped off for punishment, where genocide is becoming increasingly common instead of less common. High minded liberals want to live in a brave new world characterized by peace, love, and acceptance. Sadly, our technological advancements have far outpaced our moral/ethical advancements and we, as a species, are still not that far removed from the dark ages. Among all the lessons that man kind has learned along the way in his evolutionary development, one stands out as an ultimate truth, the strong and the powerful pray on the weak and the powerless; case in point, "gay bashing". As I said, if ever there was an American demographic in desperate need of the second amendment, it is the gay community."

In many cases, the US is the cause of the economic problems of the third world. We just exploit them for natural resources and try to extort what little money they have.

47. Election impact: One reason Latinos worry. Bad economy means KKK types target immigrants here more
Edited on Fri May-23-08 12:25 AM by McCamy Taylor
just as they do in South Africa. So, we see more violence against all Latinos, more nasty journalism of a bigoted nature in newspapers and the local news---such as tabloid style journalism anytime some one with a Spanish surname is involved in a car wreck---designed to make all Latinos look like criminals.

The goal is to refocus the anger of the working class away from the bosses and onto the immigrants, the same way that the corporations always do. The GOP will try that this fall, too. The Democratic Party needs to be very careful not to scapegoat Latinos this election. It is a shame that Feinstein's bill failed.

Please refer back to some of my journals about the racist/fascist tactics of the modern anti-immigrant movement in the US. There are some RW types that dream of using the bad economy plus anti-immigration to put another RW government in power. People like Pat Buchanan. They will try to push for McCain to select a RW VP and then cross their fingers that he dies in office.

49. South Africa is having a refugee crisis
A huge influx of people fleeing from Zimbabwe. According to the article, South Africa's economy is pretty bad and the hatred and violence stem from a panic over jobs and resources. It is terrible news and my heart goes out to all involved. Perhaps, when we finally get a Democrat in office, we can start helping these nations get themselves out of the shit they're in.

55. My company does a lot of business there and I've seen some drastic changes
I travel to Johannesburg a fair deal and the city is changing a great deal. We've had to take precautions and not use public transport or taxis, as there is a great deal of resentment from the poorer citizens and immigrants towards anyone deemed to be of a higher social standing. The police forces are stretched extremely thin and crime is absolutely soaring.

The last time I was down there, I stayed in Sandton City (part of Johannesburg) and the police were very much present around the outskirts. I talked to several who had stopped in front of my hotel and they were on the brink of exhaustion from all of the things that were happening within the city itself. The government has been very hands-off on dealing with the upswing in violence and other issues due to fear of igniting a "powder-keg".

One evening, I looked out my hotel window and saw flames in the distance, towards some of the poorer sections of the city. The next day I found out that it was a riot that broke out and some people torched a few buildings, killing several people.

59. Lots of bigotry is surfacing everywhere.
There was a report on MSNBC this morning about a city in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia?) in which the police have spent the past couple of days removing hundreds of posters someone put up blaming blacks for all kinds of problems and implying that any new problems in neighborhoods would be attributable to the African-Americans who lived in one part of the city. Be vigilant, folks. This stuff creeps up in the most insidious fashion. We need to stop it in its tracks.

61. The Philly posters remind me of Nixon-era dirty-tricks operations
No better way to turn PA GOP in November than a nice, big race riot.

I'm fairly familiar with Africa. What's going on in South Africa seems similar to the meltdown in Kenya - which also was relatively stable and prosperous until quite recently.

This is the result of a policy of massive neglect and lack of leadership in the west over refugee, development and aid issues.
