The Remaining Superdelegates Not Committing Is Genius
Seriously. Think about it. It gives us an "out" in case Clinton tries to pursue the Nuclear Option. I mean, if the remaining superdelegates have waited this long to commit to a candidate, what's the point in doing it now?

There's no need to hit the Panic Button until June 5th. Here's how this thing is going to play out:

Up until May 31st, Obama will continue to get a couple more superdelegates each day until he is about 30-40 or so short.

On May 31st, the Rules and Bylaws Committee is going to meet. They will seat Florida and Michigan somehow, although not as Clinton wants, because in no way will it overturn the results of the primaries.

On June 1st, Clinton wins Puerto Rico in a landslide, and on June 3rd, Obama wins Montana and South Dakota by a solid margin. By that time, Obama will be near enough 2025 (or whatever the new number is after the Florida and Michigan compromise is factored in) that on the morning of June 4th, enough superdels will have pledged for Obama that he will have the majority.

If Clinton hasn't conceded by the end of the day on June 4th, then on the morning of June 5th, ALL the remaining superdelegates will come out en masse to support Obama. Done. Finished. Over. With Nancy Pelosi at the microphone.

If that doesn't happen, and the remaining superdels don't commit by that date, and we don't get a firm, "Sorry, Hillary, it's over" from some Democratic bigwig, then the Democratic leadership can go fuck themselves. We've all done our part. It is imperative that they do theirs.

2. When do you think the Pelosi Club will endorse?
They already said that they'll endorse the candidate with a majority of pledged delegates, so what's stopping them. Unless the Obama campaign is holding back the announcememnt for a reason.

3. I say they should get off thier ass and give a verbal
The longer they wait the more damage she is going to do. By going in numbers to him now it would send a message that she is doing the wrong thing, by not moving at all it sends a message that she is doing the right thing.

7. Are they giving the Clinton's rope to hang themselves with?
it seems like there may be no point in stopping the Clintons from going too far.
Why not let them politically destroy themselves... life would be a lot easier.

10. Is it a power trip for the super delegates?
Look at their power. A handful of them will decide the nomination after millions of people voted/caucused. They are being courted by both camps. Why do they want to end their time in the limelight any sooner than necessary?

11. I could live with that.
At worst, Hillary would be what Ron Paul is to the Republicans. At best, we'll have a united party in about a week.

13. Where do I begin to list all the things you got wrong? OK, here goes:
Edited on Thu May-22-08 08:13 PM by StevieM
1) You have no idea what they are going to do with Florida and Michigan. The original plan, when we thought the nominee would be settled on Super Tuesday, was to just seat the delegates. But we don't know what will ultimately happen on May 31 and we won't know until they decide. We do know that it is very unlikely that there will be a 50/50 split, since the people of those states realize that a 50/50 split is the same thing as a 0/0 split. So in some way it will benefit Clinton.

2) When Obama wins the nomination the way you described that will be the way it is SUPPOSED to happen. You win the nomination by getting a majority of the delegates. It doesn't mean that somebody is "getting sent a message" to end their bad behavior, it means that one of the candidates has emerged victorious.

3) I doubt that every single superdelegate will announce for Obama, although he will probably get most. I also doubt that they will all announce on the morning of June 5 in unison.

4) No bigwig in the party will give Hillary the condescending, firm "sorry, it's over" that you are hoping for. As much as you would like this to be a moment like Goldwater taking the long walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to tell Nixon it's over, I'm afraid that the two situations are not comparable. When Obama wins, he wins--end of story. Nobody has to "do their part." This is a nominating contest. It last until one of the candidates has secured the nomination, and then it ends.

But your arrogance is the hallmark of a losing GE campaign. You have done your part indeed. You have made long-time Democrats feel unwelcome and unappreciated (unless we see the light and embrace the revolution). It's like living through the McGovern era again.

5) I'm not so sure that Obama will win Montana.

I do agree that Clinton wants to win big in Puerto Rico. But I also think that she wants every state to have a choice in a contested election. And I think that's the right thing to do.

Don't worry, Obama will have 5 whole months all to himself against McCain. If he is capable of winning then that should be more then enough time. But I doubt he is going to win this thing. I just take heart from the fact that McCain will probably only look to serve one term. Then we can have Clinton or O'Malley come forward in 2012 to crush Mitt Romney.

Steve

14. I suspect
enough will endose between PR and SD/MT to have the pledged delegates put him over the top during the latter. The the rest will pile on to prevent future bad behavior of the also rans.
