This isn't even the FIRST time ! She brought up RFK a couple of weeks ago during
a campaign stop, but stopped short of saying "assassination", in defending her staying in the race and the "anything can happen" meme.

People here were shouted down by her supporters for even SUGGESTING that is what she was hinting at. Well, now she's said it, straight out.

WHERE IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND OUR LEADERS??!!

CLINTON: No, I really can't. I think people have short memories. Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual.

If, god forbid, something like that would happen, the party could nominate a candidate from the floor. So her argument that "anything can happen" has no merit.

This crosses the line for me. With Teddy out of commish, for her to raise the spector of the Kennedy assasination is thoughtless and insensitive, if not a flagrant attempt to put fear into the electorate. She's smart enough to know better.

I will not call for her to step down, but I will call for the Super 'D's to end this for her.

On Edit: Besides, California, and the rest of the delegate rich states have come and gone, so what state would put her over the top between now and the convention? NONE!

California's primary is was February, almost four months ago! 1992's June is 2008's March or April. Her still being in the race at this point is like the 1992 pirmary going into the end of July.

Barack Obama, who leads Clinton by nearly 200 delegates and has already secured a majority of pledged delegates, has been the subject of threats. Early in the campaign, the Secret Service gave him a security detail at the request of Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Illinois).

I don't much care for Clinton, but I have a hard time believing that she would make that connection so blatently. Its just unnessicary. Even if something did happen, and I don't put it past this country to give birth to the horrific, suspending her campaign would not make any difference to her availibility, so it makes absolutely no difference to whether she should stay in or not.

Look, I don't buy the worst case scenario explanation for why she said what the artical says she said, but the best case scenario explanation for it is still pretty damn bad. If she doesn't instinctively understand why this is a road she should never set off on while making a case for why it is too soon for anyone to say that the nominating contest has gone on too long, then God help her when she has to communicate about some other complex theme that must be explained or defended.

OK, the video is getting to that part now
"I have a long enough memory that many people who finished a distant second behind eventual nominees went all the way to the convention" She lists a bunch of early convention years when that happened before and then says she is highly competitive "ahead in popular vote" etc. "People have been trying to push me out of this since Iowa... I don't know why, it is unprecedented..." She talks about how unusual it is to expect other candidates to clear the field this early then says: "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until sometime in June, we all remember that Bobby Kennedy was assasinated in California in June 1968...."

I can possibly give her terminally tone deaf on this one, but if so that is still damning with far less than very faint praise. She wandered into this talking point once before I remember. She really realy should have known by now that it was a stupid reference to make the first time, and an unforgivable one to make twice.

SO DON'T GIVE ME THE DELEGATES COUNT MORE BULLSHIT, you lost that right when you got indignant about Gore having won the popular vote (got gamed in Florida, but just like all the SD's and elected Dems jumping on the bandwagon, quit cause it was just easier and better for the county, how'd that turn out?)

Your guy will fold like a cheap tent, if I needed anymore proof of that, this manufactured outrage over a trivial statement - FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY AN APOLOGY ONCE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT IT WAS ANOTHER POINT OF "RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION" seals the deal. Good luck electing this puff ball with the coalition that couldn't elect McGovern, Mondale, Gore or Kerry. If you run around with losers, you are a loser. When I first saw the video, it took me a minute or two to figure out the relevance of her mentioning the word 'assassinated' at all. It just threw that whole sentence out of balance -- I didn't want to believe it was done intentionally.

By inference alone, bringing Bobby into the conversation would make that a loaded statement, but one that would at least be defensible, from a historical perspective. But, I believe the sentence was purposefully constructed much more literally for those too stupid to pick up on that inference.

The California primary was long ago. Just as with Bill, Bobby Kennedy was in the race in June because the California primary was in June at the time and California had 800 billion delegates even back then. If it had been in February in 1968 or 1992 those primaries may well have been over long before June.

As far as his being shot, I don't think that has any particular relevance either way. I don't think she pulled it out to scare Obama supporters, I think she was just speaking off the cuff and spouted some irrelevant nonsense because she hasn't slept since 2007.

There are plenty of good arguments to be made for why a candidate should stay in the race as long as possible. Hillary and Howard Dean both came third in Iowa, and if Dean hadn't dropped out early we might not even be in this mess right now.

So, in a discussion about why Hillary is staying in the race she brings up the month of June, Bill's campaign, and the RFK murder.

- Thinking she fears for her party if something happened to the delegate leader and alone bears the responsibility to stay in the race if it happpens?

HOWEVER, this whole issue is ridiculous. She clearly meant that Kennedy was still in the primary when he got shot in June, and obviously would have continued the campaign if he hadn't gotten shot, so why should she drop out when June isn't even here yet. I get so tired of this nit-picking, parsing everything ANYONE (except McCain) says. Her words were unfortunate and she probably immediately regretted them. And she apologized later. This wasn't a planned comment. It wasn't in a speech. She was talking to a newspaper. How can we expect our candidates to be adults, when we (and the "media") aren't? This is truly one of the dumbest, trumped up "controversies" we've had yet. Can't wait for the GE <snark>.

She made a mistake. She was obviously referencing the late date in which the '68 race was decided - when Bobby was shot the winner of the Dem nomination was still seriously in doubt. Humphrey was busy gathering the "super-delegates" of the time and Gene McCarthy was waging a fierce battle with his young campaign workers and had won several states - if you want an analogy, McCarthy was probably more like Barack than Bobby was.

Hillary is my Senator and I'm sick of her - it's time to end this thing. I'm 100% for Barack and I'm already organizing for him in the GE. But who here truly thinks Hillary was saying she was staying in because Barack might be assassinated? Sure, sure. Get real. :eyes:
