After her lackluster results in Indiana/North Carolina, it became statistically almost impossible for her to win the nomination as the rules now stand. The day after this contest, we heard the infamous "hardworking white Americans" comment from Mrs. Clinton. Now, after she has won blowouts in Kentucky and West Virginia, the SD's are still running toward Barack, and most nonpartisan analysts have called it for Obama time and again. Well, here she comes again with a statement about RFK that made democrats both for and against her wince. The fact that she said this twice already before the outrage even began only confirms that it was a conscious decision and not simply a gaffe.
My take on this? Hillary knows it's over, but there's a part of her that won't let her quit. She sees herself as a fighter and this race as historic, as well as having a major effect on the political career of the Clinton family for a long time. She has seen the writing on the wall though. She knows on a gut level that the party will not give the nomination to her, effectively overruling the will of the voters. There is some part of her acting out here, leading to these self-sabotaging statements at the very time when she can't afford any slip ups. I'm sure she has been told by many that her continuing to run will not be frowned upon, as long as she can keep her team from doing anything to hurt the party's chances in the GE. In such a situation, her continuing to say such harmful things makes no sense. Of course the race is very exhausting and nobody is perfect, but I am seeing a trend here. Hillary's subconscious is trying to get her out of a race that she knows she can't win, on some level at least.
