I think announcing that you're leaving an on-line forum is kind of silly...
Edited on Sat May-24-08 08:07 PM by trumad
and a bit disingenuous. I left once--- I didn't announce it---I just stopped posting. BUT---- I still lurked quite often. Then--I found something that compelled me to post and I started back up. A lot of us have done that and when we come back, the old timers may give us a bit of gruff, but they understand because they've been there themselves.

Nobody truly leaves this joint---not even the tombstoners. It's a good read and can be hilarious at times.

So don't get all worked up with these grandiose announcements members leaving or resigning from DU--- it's happened hundreds of times here on DU and will happen hundreds of more times.....

After awhile it starts to weigh on a person. Negativity constantly. Nothing but attacks and belittling. Not progressive: open minded, willing to listen to ideas and beliefs different than your own and to make room for those who are not exactly like you.

33. I left maybe a half dozens boards
only on one (not a political board) did I make an announcement. I got into a brawl with a moderator and made an announcement that I was leaving. I guess I felt I had been treated unfairly and I got my feelings hurt so I put up a post about leaving. I guess I also wanted to be begged to stay. Ok so another mod PMed me and asked me to stay but by that time I was too embarassed to come back after acting like a spoiled crybaby. I read the board for about 3 months than I slunk back in where a few people said Hi and welcome back. Since then I learned not to make an ass of myself with a vanity good bye post. You should never burn a bridge you might want to cross back over.

I mean if they're your buddies you just PM them and explain. I've had to leave before for extended times and that's what I've done.

Why bring a bunch of people into it who either don't know you or don't like you or just don't care? I know there's plenty here who fit those categories regarding myself.

74. Yeah... and the gales of laughter and derision is ALSO "freedom of speech."
So fucking WHAT? :eyes: Who the FUCK said OTHERWISE?

90. Yup. The pattern was very obvious.
It's truly sad to the confluence of mentally-challenged with ethically-bankrupt.

but if you're really THAT miserable on any board, you should hightail it for a while. Why make yourself feel worse?

76. I think it's ridiculous
But that's just me. I never understood why people have to announce that they're bailing out. I always chalked it up to attention-seeking.

87. One messageboard I visit had some board wars...
So the admin put up a sticky thread titled "Dramatic Exits Go Here" so whoever wanted to leave in a public huff could do so. I think it was a pretty good idea.

91. Hell, I've left many times and just plain disappeared
Edited on Sun May-25-08 03:09 AM by Fighting Irish
For months at a time. No announcement - I just left.

I figured there are so many people here, nobody will really give a shit if I post or not.

I don't understand the drama queens who have to fizzle out in a ball of flames.

Those people who are making what they see as grand exits will be back with new sock puppets within three weeks. They can always borrow some from CyberPieHole.

92. About a year ago I stopped posting on a different site
Edited on Sun May-25-08 04:04 AM by Awsi Dooger
After several years. No announcement and no particular reason, other than I was jammed with unexpected side issues at work, and the topic of that site wasn't gripping me at the moment.

Many months later someone emailed me and said they wandered into a strange thread at that website, discussing why I had left. Dozens of posts with one bizarre theory after another, plus plenty of critiques of my posting style, good and bad. I was astonished. That thread was within two weeks of my last post, when nothing was going on.

I checked the thread and it felt spooky to read the summations, so many of them in past tense. There were ridiculous rumors that I had left a damning final post that had been deleted by the moderators. Unbelievable.

The way it worked out, I had every intention of returning to that site, but the gossip thread left such a weird feeling about the place, specifically regarding many posters I thought I knew pretty well, that I haven't had the slightest desire to go back.

Around here I pay no attention to the trumpeted departures. The more interesting aspect is the posters who silently leave and return on a fairly regular timetable, based on where we are in the political calendar, the sports calendar, or otherwise. Quite often I'll notice someone missing and estimate the return date with decent accuracy, at least that's what I'm happy to claim. :)

93. Boardicide is always amusing.
Seriously, some people have such an inflated sense of self and get so adorably huffy... and I'm not even talking about whatever drama went on here, as I pretty much forgot to check here all day and just saw this thread, but on other forums where I've posted it happened often enough. It's always a treat, y'know?

94. The I'm leaving stuff is the height of arrogance and of taking yourself and this place too seriously
It's just an internet board.

Kudos for all the great work of the administrators, but its still just an internet board. I like it, but its still just an internet board. Additionally, the idea that people particularly care if you're (generic) leaving is a little self-absorbed.

96. I agree. If I can't deal with a forum anymore - I just stop posting there
That leaves the option open if I decide later on that things have changed enough, I just start posting again.

This swan song business is just waaaaaaaaaaay toooooooooo much drama for my sense of form.
