JON MEACHAM : The thought of a black president makes "white people queasy"
Edited on Sun May-25-08 10:19 AM by hexola
Did anyone just see that on Meet The Press...???

Sitting right next to Gewn Eiffel- he showed himself to be a bigot...

Gwen - fired back - shot him down...

I cant quite quote the whole exchange - but Meacham really stepped in it...!

It was right at the beginning of the roundtable...

black President but then countered that "in reality" they aren't. He might be speaking the truth, unfortunately. I don't think he is a bigot. I just think he was trying to make a point that people like those in PA, OH, WV, and KY may be hiding behind race.

14. Wow, what a dumb thing to say!
I am not one bit queasy, a 30 something white guy for Obama. I want who I feel can lead us most effectively, and perhaps change the corrupt workings of our federal gov't. Race and gender matter not.

15. I disagree. I really don't think he was talking about that.
They were discussing the issue that race played in the campaign, and the Newsweek poll in which they asked people whether Obama's race was a factor that worked against him (or something like that). They apparently asked various questions about "racial insensitivites, or anxieties that people had with people of a different race". He acknowledged that while many people would vote against Obama on issue of race, it made white people very queasy to talk about these specific question of racial biases that may exist within them. The newsweek poll graded on a level (I don't really get the system, but they graded on a scale based on various specific question) of low to higher racial anxieties, and a relatively high percentage expressed a medium to higher racial anxiety on voting issues.

(If I am thinking of the right quote) that talking about racism makes white people queasy. Then Gwen said talking about racism with white people who are queasy about it makes black people queasy.

as racist. Pretty much said, we have to talk about race.. He said it makes white people queasy and Gwen said it makes black people queasy too, but only when they have to talk to white people that are queasy about race because black deal with it all the time.

words to clarify.... that not all talk about race makes blacks queasy, but talking about it with whites who are queasy.

Basically the topic people are afraid to talk about. And he did mention polling in KY and WV.

I don't think he was being racist.

start of this thing...I felt there was no way he could garner as much of the white vote that he has... In fact, I was shocked so many black people starting backing him.

I originally supported Richardson, even enjoyed Edwards..but when it came down to Clinton vs Obama, I chose Obama..and not simply because he's black like me, but because he's better than she.

31. Heh. I would've been for Richardson if he could've come off well on teevee JUST ONCE! lolol!
But if I had it to do over again, I'd be for Obama right from the start, instead of starting with Edwards. No insult to Edwards.

33. what makes me queasy is all of the Youtube videos online right
now about what Hillary just alluded to but in the words of other people and what some of them are spewing. I won't do the disservice of posting any specific links but they are out there. The one I clicked on out of curiosity made my stomach churn and that is what they are counting on. It was full of KKK "kids" talking openly and laughing and ridiculing. They should be jailed NOW....

As much as we want to turn our heads and say it isn't an issue anymore or isn't widespread, it certainly is and I think that is what Meacham was referring to. Even the panel can't talk openly about it or have to dance around the issue.

More of a "Hillary moment" - something that didn't quite come out the way he meant...

Gwens comback was pretty good - I think she WAS referring to Meacham...
