18. The entire Bush maladministration arrested, deported to The Hague
for war crimes, all assets linking to the administration (i.e., Halliburton, KBR, Bechtel, Carlyle, just to name a few) are seized and returned to the United States Treasury. All oil companies faces intensive investigation for price gouging, taxed 150% for windfill profits and war profiteering, all monies seized from the oil companies goes purely to alternative energy research and CAFE standards raised to its all-time high. All vehicles that is 20mpg or less and not considered 'classic' are seized and recycled into new cars (and that includes those stupid Hummers)....

I can think of more....

20. End of his first term?
Git'mo will be closed. Habeas will be restored, many of chimpy's signing statements and executive orders will be rescinded. Healthcare will be improved, and expanded. Environmental laws will be renewed. Iraq will have a significantly reduced American presence.

Most importantly, a New Majority of Dems and Progressives in the House and Senate will be working hard for a President that is accepting and open to their bills. The changes could be great.

22. (1) Disengagement, even if not 100% from Iraq (2) Major national focus on greenhouse effect & energy
are two of the most important. The Supreme Court, instead of veering to the right, will have inched leftward (possibly w/Scalia's and Breyer's replacements w/more progressive Justices). A new focus of national politics on issues of policy substance and not just the kind of distractions of the last 15 years (not a 100% shift, but a shift), improvement of US image internationally, probably a shift in MidEast policy (regarding Israel), albeit probably a modest shift.

26. To begin with ......
Massive troop reduction in Iraq.

Repealing most of the unpatriot act and getting rid of most of Bush's signing statements.

Transparency put back in Federal Government.

The US will have a better standing in the world, and we will no longer be looked down upon with disdain.

Restoration of the value of the American dollar.

But make no mistake about it, there will be growing pains. The first two years of Clinton's administration was considered a complete disaster. Within his first 100 days the pundits were already writing him off, but he somewhat rebounded towards the end of his first term, at least enough to win a second term, but not enough to win us back a majority in either chamber of Congress.

40. Don't expect miracles
It takes years to build a house, and only minutes to burn it down. Rebuilding takes even longer because you have to clear away the rubble first. Bush has had 8 years to undermine the fragile edifice of American Democracy; it will be the work of several administrations, possibly more than a generation, to rebuild our standing in the eyes of the world, restore our economy, regain the balance between the haves and have-nots and wrestle control of our society from the soulless corporations that have hijacked it.

That said, I would like to see real progress toward universal healthcare (again, don't expect free Canadian-style cradle-to-grave coverage within 4 short years. Severe curtailment of the power of the insurance companies and pharmaceutical manufacturers would be a start). I also believe we will have reduced our presence in Iraq to a token "advisor" force by 2012, with a real plan for complete disengagement. Finally, I would hope to have witnessed a series of hearings, trials and incarcerations of the current administration's lackeys. We may not see the prinicpals (Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al) remanded to the Hague, but maybe enough heads, high enough up the foodchain, will rool, to give future collaborators second thought.

Would that be enough for you to regard as a successful start?

much younger progressive Supreme Court Justices.

The tax code. (no effort needed, the Bushie cuts sunset in 2010)

The defense budget. (cut)

Guantanamo Bay mothballed.

Habeous Corpus restored.

Rule of law restored.

Easing of sanctions against Cuba (as reform occurs)

Troops out of Iraq (most if not all)

Country no longer seen as global pariah.

Just for starters.

51. A better direction in just about everything
He doesn't have a magic wand to erase all of Bush's misdeeds though. The corruption in government will take some time to root out. Realistically, we can hope for a better direction in just about everything that government is involved in. It will take a 2nd term to see a lot of the results though. Bush really was that bad of a President that even a perfect job by the next President will not reverse all of the damage in just 1 term.

56. The Constitution will again be our most important document.
Gitmo will be history. Black sites will be history. Torture will be history. Most of our troops will be extricated from Iraq. World relations will have improved dramatically through diplomacy and Obama will have become every country's favorite leader, reminiscent of JFK. The free ride for corporations will have ended and so will tax benefits for outsourcing jobs. The middle class will be rebounding thanks to tax cuts, assistance with education and more jobs staying within the United States. If there is a Democratic majority in Congress, health care will be on track. If not, it will be a big fight, but Republicans will eventually cave when they realize they haven't got a prayer in the next election if they don't. Global warming and the environment will be front and center and Al Gore will be in charge of it all. Gas prices will be lowered because other technologies will be introduced and create a glut of oil on the market. There will be tax breaks for wind, solar and other alternative energy installations in homes. Most importantly, the 8 years of King George will have been put behind us and we'll be optimistic and believe we are a good and noble country again.
