))))))) Hating Hillary (((((((
Edited on Tue May-27-08 06:13 AM by indimuse

Gloating, unshackled sexism of the ugliest kind has been shamelessly peddled by the US media, which - sooner rather than later, I fear - will have to account for their sins

History, I suspect, will look back on the past six months as an example of America going through one of its collectively deranged episodes - rather like Prohibition from 1920-33, or McCarthyism some 30 years later. This time it is gloating, unshackled sexism of the ugliest kind. It has been shamelessly peddled by the US media, which - sooner rather than later, I fear - will have to account for their sins. The chief victim has been Senator Hillary Clinton, but the ramifications could be hugely harmful for America and the world.

I am no particular fan of Clinton. Nor, I think, would friends and colleagues accuse me of being racist. But it is quite inconceivable that any leading male presidential candidate would be treated with such hatred and scorn as Clinton has been.

snip>>>
Hillary Clinton, a successful senator for New York who was re-elected for a second term by a wide margin in 2006 - and who has been a political activist since she campaigned against the Vietnam War and served as a lawyer on the congressional staff seeking to impeach President Nixon - has been treated throughout the 2008 campaign as a mere appendage of her husband, never as a heavyweight politician whose career trajectory (as an accomplished lawyer and professional advocate for equality among children, for example) is markedly more impressive than those of the typical middle-aged male senator.

Rarely is she depicted as an intellectually formidable politician in her own right (is that what terrifies oafs like Matthews and Carlson?). Rather, she is the junior member of "Billary", the derisive nickname coined by the media for herself and her husband. Obama's opponent is thus not one of the two US senators for New York, but some amorphous creature called "the Clintons", an aphorism that stands for amorality and sleaze. Open season has been declared on Bill Clinton, who is now reviled by the media every bit as much as Nixon ever was.

Here we come to the crunch. Hillary Clinton (along with her husband) is being universally depicted as a loathsome racist and negative campaigner, not so much because of anything she has said or done, but because the overwhelmingly pro-Obama media - consciously or unconsciously - are following the agenda of Senator Barack Obama and his chief strategist, David Axelrod, to tear to pieces the first serious female US presidential candidate in history.

"What's particularly saddening," says Paul Krugman, professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton and a rare dissenting voice from the left as a columnist in the New York Times, "is the way many Obama supporters seem happy with the . . . way pundits and some news organisations treat any action or statement by the Clintons, no matter how innocuous, as proof of evil intent." Despite widespread reporting to the contrary,
Krugman believes that most of the "venom" in the campaign "is coming from supporters of Obama".

But Obama himself prepared the ground by making the first gratuitous personal attack of the campaign during the televised Congressional Black Caucus Institute debate in South Carolina on 21 January,(((( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEQV4K1eFjI&watch_response ))))) although virtually every follower of the media coverage now assumes that it was Clinton who started the negative attacks. Following routine political sniping from her about supposedly admiring comments Obama had made about Ronald Reagan, Obama suddenly turned on Clinton and stared intimidatingly at her. "While I was working in the streets," he scolded her, ". . . you were a corporate lawyer sitting on the board of Wal-Mart." Then, cleverly linking her inextricably in the public consciousness with her husband, he added: "I can't tell who I'm running against sometimes."

One of his female staff then distributed a confidential memo to carefully selected journalists which alleged that a vaguely clumsy comment Hillary Clinton had made about Martin Luther King ("Dr King's dream began to be realised when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964") and a reference her husband had made in passing to Nelson Mandela ("I've been blessed in my life to know some of the greatest figures of the last hundred years . . . but if I had to pick one person whom I know would never blink, who would never turn back, who would make great decisions . . . I would pick Hillary") were deliberate racial taunts.

Another female staffer, Candice Tolliver - whose job it is to promote Obama to African Americans - then weighed in publicly, claiming that "a cross-section of voters are alarmed at the tenor of some of these statements" and saying: "Folks are beginning to wonder: Is this an isolated situation, or is there something bigger behind all of this?" That was game, set and match: the Clintons were racists, an impression sealed when Bill Clinton later compared Obama's victory in South Carolina to those of Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988 (even though Jackson himself, an Obama supporter, subsequently declared Clinton's remarks to be entirely inoffensive).

I curious ..when all of this is over, how many of you will admit the truth? No matter WHO our nom is... this is archived ...forever part of our history .... you helped create. IF Obama IS the nom.. I pity you! He will lose and it WILL be ugly!

enjoy your day.

demonstrated over and over again that they'll vote for white candidate. white voters in KY, OH, PA etc. are the ones who haven't demonstrated that they will vote for a black person. And until hillykins decided to employ the disgusting southern strategy and Obama won in Iowa with white voters, AA voters favored her.

diebold will decide who wins in 2008. That is the Clinton's best arguement - corporate media (inc. New Corp), diebold, and the BFEE all want Hillary to win. To bad she couldn't get past the primary, cause she is far more electable then Obama. They (Bill and Hillary) really failed in this campaign.

112. "he has given this bitter leftie some hope"
As a perhaps rhetorical aside, I've occasionally stated: "few here on DU could probably out-left me". That's probably factually correct; on the Political Compass Test, I check out as: "Economic Left/Right: -7.50, Authoritarian/Libertarian: -4.92". But seriously arguing that point seems pointless to me. In any event, I amicably co-exist with almost all here on our DU Community.

But I'll state this: Up to several weeks ago, I kept essentially aloof from this Barak vs Hillary cat & dog fight. But no longer! I was a little kid during the FDR era, so my beliefs then would be irrelevant. But I clearly recall all the other icons of progressivism since FDR, and NONE of them has me so FIRED UP WITH HOPE as Barak Obama does! GO Obama GO!

11. I am not denying that sexism may be a factor in this election
but I just have to say that, as an Arkansan, I know of several people, including many women, who don't like Clinton because of her actions here in this state. It has nothing to do with her gender, but everything to do with her people skills--rudeness and unwillingness to listen to ideas when she's asked for ideas--well, that doesn't sit well with a lot of folks-and it would be the same if it were a man doing it.

She lost the election long ago. It started when she was the inevitable nominee and hired the likes of Mark Penn and blew 140+ million dollars.

She can't even run her campaign, how the Hell is she going to run the country. She's proven already, she hires based on loyalty and not skill and experience.

If her campaign was a country, the citizens would be starving and in the streets protesting.

If her campaign was a company, it would be bankrupt and the stockholders would be screaming!

She ran her campaign like fuckin' Enron!

31. Victim, victim, victim, that's all you folks have left is to endlessly play the victim.
Was there sexism in this race, yes, but certainly nowhere near as prevalent as the racism that was directed at Obama, and perpetrated by the Hillary campaign.

The MSM, you folks were for them before you were against them, of course that's because they were in your corner, cheering on Hillary's inevitability. Then came the Super Tuesday shocker that put Obama in the driver's seat. The media always loves a winner, so as it became increasingly obvious that Obama was going to be the nominee, the more attention they paid to him. But hey, even in the darkest days of this campaign, Hillary had the entire Faux News network in her corner, along with the Murdoch media empire, along with Rush's network, and such writers and commentators as Coulter, Hannity, and Scaife, along with many others. What you're essentially doing is criticizing the media for following their normal cycles. Good luck with that.

I'm sorry, but your complaints are quite frankly trivial. You're taking the tactics used in virtually every campaign and blowing them out of proportion and then trying to play the victim. Sorry, but no sale. Hillary brought the vast majority of her problems on herself. She didn't have a plan B, she and her surrogates kept opening their mouths and inserting their feet all the way up to their asshole. This isn't the fault of Obama, this is the fault of Clinton and her campaign. But as always, Hillary and her supporters are ignoring this reality, choosing to play the victim instead.

This tactic is just one more reason why Hillary is unfit to be the nominee. If she were to get into the general, all holy hell would break loose, and Hillary would simply wail that she was a victim rather than fighting back. Sorry, we don't need a perpetual victim, we need a presidential candidate.

So go peddle your bullshit somewhere else, we aren't buying it.

Mcarthyism destroyed thousands of lives.

And poor poor Hillary, a victim of one, should be compared to these historic situations.

Her fucking ego is the problem. She acted from day one like an entitled spoiled human being.

Lety me make this clear to all of you foolish followers of her. She will never be president. Not of this country.

This country hates her too much. It has nothing to do with what is between her legs and everything to do with what isn't in her chest, a HEART. She is a grubbing dirty politician who will fuck over any and everyone to get elected.

...she has acted like an ASS in this campaign.

Many - like me, had no problem with her before. I even admired her at on time, for a long time.

No more.

And it has nothing to do with her being "a girl".

I suspect even in the media to some extent, the reasons are the same. She has caricatured herself as much or more as anyone else has.

In large part, she has NO ONE to blame but herself.

You may return to your whining on her behalf now.

Hillary Clinton is a victim of is herself. Even before this primary started it was a foregone conclusion that she would be the nominee at the end of it all and most democrats were ready to align behind her. However despite her claims of being vetted and ready on day one she continuously mismanaged her campaign throughout the primaries, including having no strategy after Super Tuesday, and also committed numerous gaffes including outright lying about NAFTA and Bosnia, as well as having conflicts of interest between what she said on the trail and what her campaign staff did a la the Columbian Trade deal.

I'll be honest, I never really liked Clinton from the beginning. Mainly because I knew from the start she was more about self promotion, rather than doing anything for the country. That being said when this all began I assumed I'd be pulling the lever for her in November no matter what happened in the primary. Fortunately I now have an alternative.

I have always thought that Hillary was a very intelligent person, then again I also think Condoleezza Rice is very intelligent too, though I would never in a million years vote for her for president.

I'm honestly a little surprised at how some of her supporters are reacting to her defeat. Instead of examining where she went wrong, they spout the campaigns own talking points about sexism and unfairness. These same people were of course silent when the media was drilling us with Jeramiah Wright for weeks on end. But look, Barack Obama survived all that. Hillary Clinton has proven unable to handle a situation like that.

What did Obama do that she did not? Well when it all came out about Wright Obama engaged the public directly about Wright and about the broader issues that topic entailed through live press conferences. What did Clinton do? After alluding to RFK's assassination as a reason to continue on in a primary where she is virtually defeated she wrote an op-ed snark (worthy of GD-P I might add)about how she is right and everyone else is wrong. If you compare the two flaps and the candidates subsequent reactions you can see why Clinton is behind. If anything the reason she has remained within around 150 delegates behind is only because people keep giving her the benefit of the doubt!

I think in the end most Clinton supporters will have to come to terms with the fact that they were sold a bill of goods on Clinton and she did not deliver. You will have to face facts, Hillary Clinton was a poor and disappointing candidate which is the ONLY reason she is losing, and it is just another reason she wouldn't have made a good POTUS!

116. "Vanish"? No, but it'll probably be taken a LOT less seriously by the voters
when ONLY the McCain gang is flogging those RW Talking Points. So take a deep breath and consider your OWN actions. ie: THINK!

95. I'm glad Obama said if he loses the GE, it won't be because of race.

Thank God he has class.

I'm tired of a few poor losers incessantly whining about how Hillary is victim of this, that and the other "ism". She blew a huge lead to arrive at this point. One of her major talking points was how she had been "vetted" and could take anything that could be thrown at her, that Obama was "unvetted" and would go down in smoke after a couple shots, and she chose the negative kitchen sink route for a Dem-on-Dem primary race in an attempt to prove her point, knowing that by nature the negative route can only divide and polarize. So here we are, and her supporters have nothing left but to snivel about unfairness and taunt a prediction that the Dem nominee Obama will lose the GE.

I assume you think you haven't joined McCain's team yet, indimuse, so maybe you can tell us how you expect Dems rallying behind the Dem nominee Obama to react to your statement "He will lose and it it WILL be ugly!" With respect and love?

123. Yeah! Silly Black people don't know the first thing about racism!!
They are easily confused by the evil Left Wing media and think that innocuous statements about "the WHITE working class" and "getting the WHITE vote" and statements about WHITE people never voting for a black president, are racist.

All they have to go on is 300+ years of experience, and history.

And, of course they have no clue about sexism because Black women have never experienced it.

After all the Clintons and their surrogates have told us that they like black people and have tried to help them with welfare reform.

My disgust for her springs from her IWR vote and the disgraceful way she has conducted herself during this campaign.

135. So, how many Obama supporters would welcome a woman president?
If they're "misogynists" as the OP claims, then it must follow that Obama supporters hate women, and wouldn't want one to be president.

I very strongly suspect that the vast majority of Obama supporters would gladly support other women candidates that aren't in thrall to the DLC/Rightwing of the Democratic Party.

Your cries of misogyny and sexism don't pass the smell test.

138. I wonder if this phenomenon will be examined
I think during the campaign the media wasn't necessarily biased towards Obama, though it might have been, but I think their treatment of Hillary in the past has been sexist and has created some sexist hatred of her which is totally unfettered on the Internet.

I think I see some signs of awareness in the media, in a few pundits who seem to be going out of their way to be fair to her.

152. Here is the problem with your complaints of Hillary losing because of sexism
Edited on Tue May-27-08 09:00 PM by grantcart

1) The evidence shows that she had a commanding lead but in the 8 months of campaigning has lost support.

2) Now Obama has a larger lead over Clinton in NY State

Now either she is a terrible campaigner and has squandered the advantages of name brand, money, connections and a schedule of primaryies that was rigged for her. Even in NY her numbers have gone down.

So either she is a terrible campaigner, or you are right that sexism is holding her down and she can't win which means that your electablility argument is false. In either case she isn't a good GE candidate.
