A true Floridian's perspective:
If my kids weren't settled in school and life in the neighborhood, I'd move the fuck out of this dumb ass state so fast it'd make Chuck Yeager look like he was on Quaalude's.

1. I hear you...
Though my reasons would be less in the area of kids and more in the area of the 18 month inventory of homes here in Palm Beach county.

3. every time I think I'm there
I think of the local beaches and birds and my beautiful willow tree, and I can't.

There aren't many beaches where the sand isn't hot, and as long as they're here, I think I'll be here.

4. Agree with all of your reasons, however;
Eventually if there are enough of us - change happens.

Change begins in my backyard and continues outward. I just wish it wasnt so darn slow!

5. They had to drag me here
I didn't want to come here. My husband got a job here. As soon as we can retire we are OUT of here.

To any young family, DON'T move here and put your kids in the Florida's school system. I work in one. It absolutely shocks me how had it is in comparison to where I am from.

6. The Public School Systems Leave a lot to be desired.
I also work in a school system in a high-end area in North Palm Beach County. My child came from a private school in Miami. I foolishly thought that things were OK up here and could put my child in Public school. It was the worst decision I ever made!

15. The school system is terrible, getting worse everyday.
We used to have a good public school system until the Bush family tried their theories out here.

They used to hire only college graduates as teachers, but the year I retired they began to hire substitute teachers as regular teachers though they had just two year degrees. Okay in some cases. Mostly not okay.

They have lessened standards in some counties until almost anyone can get hired.

16. Yes, I know
I was in absolute shock to learn that with a 2 year degree I could substitute teach here in Collier. I am a Teacher's Assistant with an Associates. In NYS starting in 2004, all TA's MUST have at least a 2 year degree and be certified the same as teachers.

My daughter has been teaching in NYC for a year. She has a BS in Childhood Education, BUT only has 2 more years to get her Masters or her certification will be taken away and she cannot teach anywhere in NYS.

I could go on and on. All I can say is that it's a mess here, in more ways than one.

7. If you're not happy here, by all means, feel free to move out!
For all this state's problems, disfunctions and imperfections, I love this state. I love the weather. I love the natural areas. I love the diversity of people living here.

I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

Unfortunately, urban sprawl and development has encroached on a lot of what makes Florida great. Therefore, the less demand there is for others to live here, the more there is here for me to enjoy.

14. It's horrible. People are just uninformed and foolish.
They don't even pretend to be otherwise. It is easier to be blend in and be like the rest.

17. My entire family is from FL, both sides. It's become more of a parking lot
with each passing year. Sad, really.

If you are interested in what a cluster the politics in FL are, read some Carl Hiassen books/columns. He
doesn't pull any punches.
