Obama considering Iraq visit

Barack Obama is considering a visit to Iraq this summer, his first since becoming a presidential candidate.

The Democrat, who has been criticized by Republican rival John McCain for not visiting Iraq since 2006, revealed his plans to The New York Times. He also declined McCain's invitation for a joint trip.

"I just don't want to be involved in a political stunt," Obama said, according to a report on the newspaper's Web site Wednesday.

"I think that if I'm going to Iraq, then I'm there to talk to troops and talk to commanders," he said in the interview. "I'm not there to try to score political points or perform. The work they're doing there is too important."

McCain said he was pleased to hear that Obama was considering making the trip.

2. I feel like I heard he was considering this a couple of months ago
Which kind of sucks, now that McCain has used this as an "attack" on him. Eh, maybe it wasn't just to Iraq, but traveling to the middle east in general. That was during the time when it was possible that this could end after Texas/Ohio. McCain's trip to Iraq was the motherfucking epitome of propaganda!

6. Uhh..I dunnooooo...like others, I'm concerned for his safety over there...
...and would NOT put it past certain factions to make this a 'trap' for Obama. I'm not saying anything else. Tinfoil hat theories are running too wild in my head just now.

Egh.

7. It's a good idea

The rethugs were going to continue to beat him over the head with his Iraq as long as he hadn't been to Iraq since the surge started. He can go see what is happening on the ground and decide based on that what his policy will be. I don't think he'll go until after Hillary concedes.

Don't worry about his safety. The US military and USSS will keep him safe. The military will not allow anything to happen to a presidential candidate or be seen in anyway as trying to influence the political process of the United States.

16. Nicola Calipari and Giuliana Sgrena. . .

Yet, I trust Team Obama WILL KNOW exactly how to protect Barack as they organize and carry out their Iraq trip.

Hopefully, he will go with other Democrats like Senator Reed (D-RI) and/or Speaker Pelosi to emphasize his fact-finding purpose instead of McCain's photo-op trap.

I trust ONLY Team Obama on this plan. . .

13. The soldiers likely support Obama over McCain
Many of them want to come home, but can't, because it would mean being sent to court.
