Mr. Kitchell,

As you may have heard by now, Barack Obama has claimed that his great uncle Charlie Payne was a member of the 89th Div that liberated Buchenwald.

According to records his full name is either Charles W Payne or Charles T Payne (most likely the former), and he was born in 1924 — and he is still alive today.

He most likely was from Kansas at the time of enlistment.

Do you have any record of this gentleman?

WWII vets do not suffer fools gladly. There are only a few of them left, and from what I've seen lately, they are not pleased.

This was in 1972 or so - He was about 25......He eventually admitted he'd never served a day.

Stealing honorable service, like lying about being under sniper fire, is about the lowest thing someone can do to veterans...Which is why I threw a fit about Tuzla.

Did you ever notice that everybody and their dog claims to be a Navy Seal, too? If they claimed to be a cook no one would ever check them out.

By the way - the Navy keeps a registry - online, I think- of all the captains who ever ran Seal units. Ask the guy claiming to be a Seal who his Captain was.....That will go a long ways towards finding out who is who....

And the only Seal I ever knew for any length of time never bragged about who and what he'd been. Ever.

I had a cousin in the Marketbasket fiasco, an uncle in Guadalcanal that lasted until Bougainville (shrapnel that probably saved his life), an uncle who collected a purple heart on a fleet tug in the pacific due to kamikazes, a dad with the pacific fleet who went all the way to tokyo. In fact, I had about 24 relatives in that war and NONE of them would have a good thing to say about this sliming. None of them.

Doesn't matter how bravely a man served his country if he's not serving the interests of the right wing.
