7. Just that he's a smoker...
Edited on Thu May-29-08 11:38 AM by polichick
...who has tried to quit several times, which Jim Warren (msnbc) just suggested makes Obama less elitist, with personal struggles like everybody else.

21. As a former smoker
if he has low triglycerides, then his stop smoking program has worked. Clean bill of health for Obama! :woohoo:

msnbc reported that the doc said he was still trying to quit ~ and Barack's personal assistant recently listed Nicorette as one of the things he buys for the candidate. I'm not sure the doc was up to date on his progress.

31. I missed the 'trying' part when I first read the OP
I'm also older than Obama and quit cold turkey 2 years ago. My doctor was delighted when my triglyceride levels returned to normal range, so I guess I started the celebration a little bit prematurely. It's a hard thing to quit under the most mellow of circumstances; can't imagine how difficult it is during a presidential campaign. And yet despite all the pressure, he keeps his poise.

35. Congrats to you! My dad quit cold turkey too...
...in protest when cigarettes went up to 35 cents a pack! Cold turkey might be the best way to go, but I agree that Barack's doing great under all that pressure!

37. I HAD to quit cold turkey...
Nicorette made all my teeth loose and I was allergic to the adhesive in the patch. I must have tried at least 20 times before I made it. I'm very happy for YOU that your dad quit when they went up to 35 cents a pack--when was that, about 1964? My mom always threatened to quit when they went up to 50 cents but she never did and died from complications from smoking at 67. It is definitely worth it to quit. I'm sure Barak Obama's two beautiful little girls would agree.

38. It was sometime in the early 60s...
He came home fuming about the price and that was the end of it - lol, I don't think health even entered into it. But I sure was glad! My dad was raised on a tobacco farm, and when we visited his parents I stayed outside as much as possible because almost every relative who'd drop by to see us smoked.

8. Blood pressure is90/60? Damn that's a teen's blood pressure.
In humans, blood pressure doesn't vary greatly. In healthy persons, blood pressure increases from about 80/45 in infants, to about 120/80 at age 30, to about 140/85 at age 40 and over. Blood pressure increases with age because the arteries loose elasticity.

20. 90/60 is a bit too low. Very low blood pressure can also be problematic.

27. No longer true.
The "120/80" benchmark is NOW regarded as the high end of the 'healthy' range and anything BELOW that is regarded as good. The average BP for folks with NO indication of hypertension is about 110/65.

32. 90/60 was my BP the last time it was checked
But I'm 21 and he's 46. Granted I have a friend who is my age who is on BP medication. Family history combined with poor diet and too much drinking.

22. Until I passed age 50
my blood pressure was always 90-something over 50-something, and my doctor said that was in the low normal range. She considered it a good thing. Now it's 100-something over 70-something. Still good. Normal is a range, not a set of specific numbers.

25. Obama's numbers fall into the Hypotension category based on your own graph
For a former smoker that seems odd.

Not sure it's all that great, actually, but that's what those thin guys can do, I guess.
