Donald Sutherland gave us Keifer, and now this:
It is incomprehensible to me that Mrs. Clinton can seriously be touting the notion, with the support of the punditocracy of CNN and Fox, that she is leading in the popular vote and should therefore be seriously considered as the most electable candidate in the November election.

She's including those who voted for her in Florida and Michigan's name recognition ballot saying that to exclude them would be to disenfranchise them. What about the Democrats in Alaska, American Samoa, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nebraska, Washington, Hawaii and Wyoming who did not cast ballots because they were playing by the pledged delegates playbook and voted by caucus. What about them? Certainly if the rules are going to be changed and judgment is based on the 'popular' vote those voters in the eleven caucus states and Samoa will be disenfranchised. What about them?

And what about us? What about the American people? Haven't we had enough of Mrs. Clinton's mad antics in her pursuit of the realization of venal personal ambition; her 'say anything, do anything, no matter what' effort to manipulate our all too willing media to gull this country's populace into believing that her wretched illegitimacy is indeed legitimate. How much mendacity do we have to suffer, how much brazenness do we have to swallow before someone, anyone, has the decency, the common sense, to relieve us of this terrible trifle, this pathetic madness?

Or the play if someone out there is producing it. It's an incredibly powerful antiwar statement, one that sticks in your head forever.

35. Did you see the story on the CBS Sunday Morning show last week
about why we saw his rear in Animal House? It was an interview with Karen Allen. The director wanted to show *her* rear, she was arguing, and Sutherland was listening with amusement. He suggested that if she showed hers he should show his.

16. Kiefer is one of us. Fuck, his grandpa was the father of Canada's Universal Healthcare and voted
Edited on Thu May-29-08 10:08 PM by Bigleaf
"The Greatest Canadian" in a poll of Canadians.

This is from his appearance on the Charlie Rose show.

CHARLIE ROSE: What are your politics?
KIEFER SUTHERLAND: To a large degree private.
CHARLIE ROSE: None of my business.
KIEFER SUTHERLAND: To a large degree they`re private, but I believe - I believe inherently that - that we have a responsibility to take care of each other, so when you can talk about socialized healthcare, absolutely, that`s a no-brainer. Free universities, absolutely, that`s a no-brainer for me. So in the definition, I guess those are leaning towards socialist politics. To me it`s common sense. And I do believe the wealthy have a responsibility to the less fortunate. Some people call that communism. I disagree. Again, it`s common sense. But I would have to say that my politics would be leaning towards the left.
CHARLIE ROSE: And do you get a lot of grief from your friends because we`ve had lots of discussions about torture in the last -- since we have been in Iraq ...
KIEFER SUTHERLAND: Yeah.
CHARLIE ROSE: ... whether it`s Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib or -- or other places where it is the Patriot Act ...
KIEFER SUTHERLAND: No, what happened in Abu Ghraib was just absolutely criminal. And not only was it criminal but it was as a nation it`s going to go in and trying to tell people how to live, which is exactly what we`re doing, and we`re going to tell you that democracy and freedom and this is the way to go, and then go and behave like that. Inexcusable.
CHARLIE ROSE: But you get some grief for what the show does?
KIEFER SUTHERLAND: Absolutely. And it is widely known that torture - - you can torture someone and they`ll basically tell you exactly what you want to hear, whether it`s true or not, if you put someone in enough pain. Torture is not a way of procuring information. The way of procuring information is actually -- is in fact quite the opposite, and, unfortunately, that takes a lot of time. Within the context of our show, which is a fantastical show to begin with, the torture is a dramatic device to show you how desperate a situation is.

25. Republican? He was boinking Jane Fonda during her "Hanoi Jane" days.
Edited on Thu May-29-08 10:30 PM by Blondiegrrl
He ex-wife was arrested for trying to buy hand grenades for the Black Panthers.

This was at a time when the FBI's infamous COINTELPRO was at its height, working hard to undermine the left in general and the Black Panthers in particular. Sutherland remembers his co-star Clint Eastwood, soon to become Hollywood's most visible rightwinger (albeit of the Main Street, relatively sufferable stripe) approaching him on the Yugoslavian set of Kelly's Heroes with a big shit-eating grin on his face, bursting with bad news. "He said, 'We just heard that Shirley's been arrested in LA for trying to buy hand grenades for the Panthers from an undercover FBI agent - and she tried to pay him with a personal cheque!' At which point Clint just fell on the ground laughing and could hardly stand up!" Shirley had been arrested, but was never charged.
