Demanding Apologies is for Assholes.
Edited on Fri May-30-08 10:20 AM by rucky
If somebody's sorry, they apologize.

If they're not, they don't - then they're the asshole.

If they're apologizing on-demand - are they doing it because they're really sorry and they were going to apologize anyways? Maybe they saw the error of their ways? Or are they doing it to shut somebody the hell up? How do you know? Is there a sincere-o-meter that the demander gets to judge from? Then the demander gets to declare whether they're satisfied or not. How convenient. That's quite a privlige to play for.

Seriously, what's the point of "demanding" an apology? What's the value of receiving a demanded apology beyond smug self-satifaction? It's a bullshit power game. It's a bully tactic, but it's not typically identified as one because of its chickenshit nature.

If you're offended at something, you point out what offended you and why. The rest is up to the offender.

2. You are so right, rucky!
I think too many years of Republican Rule has made us accept this silly premise. Republicans always "demand an apology" to make their adversaries look humble and like they have done something wrong. It's a gimmick.

It's unrelated, but it reminds me a little me MoveOn sendng email demanding the resignation of one of John McCain's advisors who support dictatorships...that was so silly. I know enough about McCain to know that this is the kind of advisors he likes. But I won't vote for him, so what do I care? Why would MoveOn spend precious resources working on McCain's campaign?

I think Republican tactics of false righteousness and outrage have permeated deep into our society. We need to shed these obsolete garments! :)

7. Demanding apologies is DESPERATE OBAMA BASHING, pure & simple.
Stirs up the news again and drops another vague doubt into the minds of those who just scan the headlines. "Uh oh, another pastor problem for Obama."

9. Agreed. I have a two word answer for anyone who demands an apology.
Yes, those words are "f**k you."

I agree. If one feels a need to apologize, they should do so, but demanding an apology is a candy ass move.

11. What if demanding an apology is just a formality before challenging them to a duel?
Surely swinging chainsaws at each other at close quarters isn't "candy ass."

12. the title of your post suggests that you wouldn't understand
the concept of apologizing is based in the assumption that the parties respect one another, and do not wish to offend each other.

If you don't respect others, and don't care if you offend them, then no, apologizing and demanding apologies won't make sense to you.
