McCain's press conference MSNBC--very thin-skinned re his "surge" troop level gaffe!
McCain seems a twin of Bush--not inquisitive, a "gut-thinker," and seemingly not at all concerned about the "details"--the facts on the ground, that is.

McCain Asserts Return to Pre-Surge Iraq Troop Levels

By Michael D. Shear
Sen. John McCain has attacked Sen. Barack Obama for not traveling to Iraq to see the "facts on the ground." But a recent statement by McCain about troop levels has his opponents raising questions about his own knowledge.

In comments to reporters on Thursday, McCain asserted that "I can tell you that it is succeeding. I can look you in the eye and tell you it's succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels. Basra, Mosul and now Sadr City are quiet and it's long and it's hard and it's tough and there will be setbacks."

In fact, as the Obama campaign was quick to point out, the troop level in Iraq is at about 155,000 right now, well above the 130,000 that would mark a return to pre-surge levels. The goal, according to a transcript of a news briefing with Joint Staff director for operations Lt. Gen. Carter Ham at the end of February, is to reduce troop levels to 140,000 -- still above the pre-surge levels.

Three of the five brigades that were added during the surge have been rotated out. The other brigades are in process of rotating out, and even when they depart, support personnel that were added during the surge will remain for the time being, military officials have said.

McCain's comments about Mosul being "quiet" also have raised some eyebrows. On the day that he said that, three suicide bombings in Mosul and the surrounding areas had left 30 Iraqis dead.

25. Poor McCain now saying he said "drawing down" not "drawn down." Youtube clearly shows otherwise!
And, do note the foreign policy advisor defending McCaiin--none other than PNACer/neocon Randy Scheunemann!

Troop Numbers Flap is 'Nitpicking,' Say McCain Advisers

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., speaks at a news conference Friday, May 30, 2008, in Milwaukee. (Associated Press)

By Michael D. Shear

Advisers to Sen. John McCain said the flap over whether the senator was mistaken about the troop level in Iraq is nothing more than "nitpicking" about "verb tenses."

McCain said yesterday that "we have drawn down to pre-surge levels," despite the fact that two of the five brigades that were added during the surge are not scheduled to be home until the end of July.

Democrats seized on the gaffe, saying that it shows he either "doesn't know the facts on the ground in Iraq or he is continuing the Bush Administration's pattern of intentionally misleading the public."

But McCain's advisers, including Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl and McCain's foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, both hit back hard on a conference call this afternoon.

"It is the essence of semantics," a frustrated Scheunemann told reporters who asked about the mistake. "We're having this call about a verb tense. If you choose to write a story about Senator McCain and a verb tense, you need to hold Senator Obama to the exact same standard."

2. Did anyone point this stuff out???
The man doesn't know what the HELL he is talking about & none of the news organizations report on these discrepancies. I heard him say this yesterday, that we had returned to pre-surge levels, when even I know that we haven't....

If we elect this man as POTUS, we deserve him, what a sad state of affairs....

16. McCain was reported to be either 5'6" or 5'9" according to his medical records released last Friday.
Edited on Fri May-30-08 02:45 PM by flpoljunkie
GUPTA (voice-over): We're learning just how extensive McCain's operation for melanoma was in 2000. Doctors removed 34 lymph nodes in his neck. Doctors say the high number was due an abundance of caution. He still has swelling that is obvious.

McCain's had melanoma removed four times. The most recent in 2002. There's a 66 percent chance of it recurring within ten years. Eight years have already passed.

Also new, McCain had skin cancer taken off his leg in February of this year. Squamous cell carcinoma. His campaign insists it's under control. Blood pressure, 134 over 84. Fine. Cholesterol 192. That's down from 226 just five years ago. It looks like the medications are helping here.

He's also had an operation to reduce the size of his prostate. He smoked two packs a day for 25 years up until 1980 and had polyps removed from his colon, but no signs of cancer from any of those.

He was beaten and tortured while a POW. His shoulders were both broken. To this day, he can't lift them over his head. And doctors say he may need both shoulders replaced.

He does get dizzy from time to time, especially when tipping his head back. Diagnosis? Vertigo, a problem with his inner ear.

As far as fitness goes, medical records had him at both 5'6" and 5'9". We'll go with 5'9". Weight 163. That puts his BMI at 24. Pretty good pushing the normal limits. His heart and circulatory system were all within normal limits for a man his age.

21. Like Bush, he's started lying about his height. He's 5'6. Bush is 5'9.
When Bush was governor of Texas, he had a new license number and record issued for himself, and in it, he went from 5'9 to 6'0 tall. McCain is doing the same thing. He's claiming to be 3 inches taller than he is.

5. Right. But let's be clear:
McCain is very thin-skinned about EVERYTHING. And that is a very negative characteristic in an already seriously flawed candidate. I think it's something that is often referred to as a meme.

Rarely do they address the criticism. They just attack Obama on a personal level. It just comes off sounding like an angry old man.

13. heh....there isn't anyone in DC who knows McCain's trigger points better than the man who used to
protect him on sensitive, emotional matters that left McCain vulnerable.

Then McCain spent 2004 betraying that man.

24. It was just a mere "verb tense" mistake, *so stop sayin' that!*
;-)

"(...)
The McCain campaign is battling aggressively to limit media pickup of McCain's mistake, telling reporters that they shouldn't be nit-picking about what was merely a "verb tense" mistake. But judging by the first round of coverage in The Washington Post, the Obama team is getting the story told its way...

McCain Asserts Return to Pre-Surge Iraq Troop Levels
Sen. John McCain has attacked Sen. Barack Obama for not traveling to Iraq to see the "facts on the ground." But a recent statement by McCain about troop levels has his opponents raising questions about his own knowledge.

That's exactly the coverage the McCain camp doesn't want, and that the Obama camp does want. Will the rest of the coverage follow suit? It seems like flubbing a fact about troop levels is a bit of a gaffe for someone who regularly attack his opponent's experience and fitness to be commander in chief."

28. wow
Reporters were actually giving the McCain campaign a hard time, and I missed it? Is this the land of make believe? McCain is thin skinned on EVERYTHING. I generally think that Maureen Dowd is a troll, but I think she made a couple of good points last Sunday on Meet the Press. McCain sees every criticism of one of his policies as an attack on his integrity, and gets defensive and attacks the other person's integrity. What a fucking narcissist.

Obama On McCain's Troop-Level Gaffe: "Anyone Running For Commander-In-Chief Should Know Better"
By Greg Sargent - May 30, 2008, 6:26PM

The Obama campaign is in good spirits as Friday's happy hour rolls around, chiefly because they clearly won today's political skirmishes with John McCain. They got McCain to admit he was wrong to use General Petraeus' photo in a political attack. And they put him on the defensive over his flubbing of a fact about troop levels in Iraq.

And Obama will continue to squeeze the troop-levels gaffe -- in which McCain wrongly said that we'd drawn down troops to pre-surge levels -- in a Montana speech tonight. Prepared excerpts from the campaign:
