Oh great. America is becoming known as the nation that hates women.
Lucid article from the Montreal Gazette about the Democrats' misogyny problem--revealed in all its glory by the Obama campaign:

Borderline misogyny
Calls for Clinton to quit seem to be because she's a woman
JANET BAGNALL

The demonization of Hillary Clinton has reached such a pitch that when she tried to remind Americans that presidential nomination contests have often carried on into the summer months, she found herself accused of waiting to see whether her opponent, Barack Obama, would be killed....

The increasingly hysterical calls for her to withdraw from the contest started long before last week when she pointed out that it wasn't unusual to continue to campaign into the summer and even up to the convention itself. Her husband didn't nail down the 1992 Democratic nomination until June; Bobby Kennedy was still campaigning in June 1968....

Here's a comment on what India thinks of us:
wow.. one of my friends from India just IMed me... she's telling me that they are discussing the US elections on their political shows and are basically making fun of americans and saying how US is more screwed up than they thought.

she's saying on this indian political show, they said how the US doesn't count millions of votes, treats a woman candidate with such disrepect. and then they are comparing it to Indira Gandhi, the former PM of India, and how the political talk show hosts are taking pride in this.. that India had its first woman PM more than 50 years ago..

she says they are talking about how the US keeps acting like its better than everyone, but then they are saying its more screwed up than other countries...

After affirmative action, a lot of us women were able to get into fields that were formerly completely closed to women. Hillary Clinton is eight years younger than I am. There were some tracks for her to follow, and she will also leave her mark on history.

It's too bad Hillary got in the line of fire -- or put herself in the line of fire, but there's no turning back.

For the sake of the party, let's get on with it. I do hope that NEITHER the gender discrimination NOR the discrimination against blacks gets in the way of getting a WINNING TICKET TOGETHER. I believe in strength in numbers, but you may think otherwise.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon

PS. Flames will get you nowhere. Tomorrow is my 69th birthday and I'm not doing it anymore

She's the one devoting all of her energy to encouraging the perception all out of proportion to any gender-based obstacles she's actually faced during the campaign. "Indian history has been witness to only one female Prime Minister - Indira Gandhi. She was the third Prime Minister of India and the daughter of the first - Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru.

... On June 26th, 1975, Mrs. Gandhi declared an emergency, due to the turbulent political situation in the country at that time. Janta Party leaders like J.P. Narayan were arrested and jailed. But Mrs. Gandhi lost out to them in the next election in 1977 and was re-elected to power in 1980. Later, in Punjab there was a demand for a separate state of Khalistan, and the Sardarji's were up in arms. But their demands were not met and this was the cause of her ultimate assassination.

... On Wednesday, October 31, 1984, when Indira Gandhi was proceeding to her office, she was gunned down by her own bodyguards."

87. I'm actually more familiar with Mughal-period India than post-independance
and I was 10 when she was killed. But she had gotten into the bad habit of crushing dissent with military force - in all societies a good way to paint a target on your back.

Both previous rulers of India - the British and the Mughals - mostly got along with the Sikhs, but both had a lot of trouble with them whenever they tried to interfere with their religious or cultural autonomy.

As for Gandhi and Clinton, I think it's a stretch. Gandhi was the only female PM India has had, and she was the daughter of one of the primary architects of Indian independence, and had the name of another. In American terms, something like Thomas Jefferson's daughter marrying a Washington.

98. Unfortunately, I don't remember my Mughal period readings
Most of it was for a college class, and we read a variety of sources. Wikipedia has a decent entry on the first 5 Mughal Emperors, after which the empire went into decline.

For modern Indian history, my favorite book is actually fiction. Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children." "The Satanic Verses" controversy may have made him a household name, but this was the book that put him on the literary map. It won the Booker prize when it was published in 1981, as well as a special, "Best of the Booker winners" prize a few years ago. Obviously, it is fictional, and Rushdie has more than a few axes to grind (he was successfully sued by Ms. Gandhi for his portrayal of her, for example), but it covers many of the major events of Indian history from about the turn of the 20th century until the late 1970s. The title refers to children who were born on the exact moment of Indian independence who all have special abilities, one of whom is the narrator.

The book sounds fascinating, and I am intrigued by the notion of children with special abilities due to the circumstance of being born at a historic moment.

Thank you so much. I have noted the title of the book, its author, and will peruse my local library system for it. :hi:

Rushdie has never outdone it. I've been thinking about rereading it myself. It's long and complex, and Rushdie's writing style is pretty elaborate, but it never bogs down thanks to his sense of humor, imagination and obvious love for his homeland.

119. I have done some reading on Wikipedia and now cannot wait to read Rushdie's book.
I don't know if his book mentions Akbar or not, but this is one biography I definitely have to find and read.

Everyone knows about Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, but how many people are familiar with the name Akbar?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akbar

Akbar, widely considered the greatest of the Mughal emperors, was only 14 when he became emperor, due to the death of his father Humayun. During his reign, he eliminated external military threats from the Afghan descendants of Sher Shah (an Afghan who was able to temporarily oust Humayun from 1540–1555), and at the Second Battle of Panipat he defeated the Hindu king Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya, also called Hemu. In addition to his military gains, the emperor solidified his rule by repealing the jizya tax on non-Muslims and courting the favour of the powerful Rajput caste, to the extent of marrying Rajput princesses.

Akbar was a polymath: an architect, artisan, artist, armorer, blacksmith, carpenter, construction worker, emperor, engineer, general, inventor, animal trainer (reputedly keeping thousands of hunting cheetahs during his reign and training many himself), lacemaker, technologist and theologian. His most lasting contributions were to the arts. He initiated a large collection of literature, including the Akbar-nama and the Ain-i-Akbari, and incorporated art from around the world into the Mughal collections. He also commissioned the building of widely admired buildings, and invented the first prefabricated homes and movable structures. Having a greatly tolerant attitude toward religion he began a series of religious debates where Muslim scholars would debate religious matters with Sikhs, Hindus, Cārvāka atheists and even Jesuits from Portugal.

Again, thank you so much. It's the opportunity to learn new things that keeps me coming back to DU. :)

120. nah, Rushdie's book is all 20th century
There may be an offhand reference or two to the Mughals in there, but not really any detail.

Akbar was indeed a fascinating individual. His wide religious interest actually led him to develop his own personal syncretic faith. A useful trait as a Muslim ruler of a largely non-Muslim population. Most historians consider the reign of his great-grandson, Aurangzeb as the start of the Mughal decline, as he was a zealous Muslim, and spent a huge amount of money and goodwill trying to conquer and convert the non-Muslim parts of India.

By tradition, they are claimed as descendants of Genghis Khan. "Mughal" was the Persian word for Mongol.

He's quite knowledgeable about history, so we chatted a bit about the Moghal Empires (obviously he did most of the talking). He immediately corrected my mispronunciation of "Mughal" :)

When I mentioned Akbar, it was my turn to give him information on how immensely talented and skilled Akbar was. I'm really looking forward to reading his biography and reading Rushdie's book. Usually my reading material is confined to legal/forensic mysteries and such.

Granted, Max Headroom is a noble character that suggests deep underlying thought and consideration. So, going by your avatar, I must be wrong about this.

Still, maybe you could try posting something that's productive to the cause of democrats, instead of these posts that seem to be dedicated to focusing on their differences?

Just a thought. I'm thinking you could really help out by posting this sort of chiding commentary on the republican boards.

it is just Hillary. Just because a woman does not want to sleep with you, does not mean she rejects all men. It may just be you, and perhaps only you, that she finds offensive.

I have no problem with women, I am married to one and work for another, no problems. I just don't care for Hillary. President Pelosi could be an interesting choice and one that I would be entirely likely to support. It is just Hillary.

Terry McAwful owns one.

Hillary, Nutcrackers & Sexism

May 30, 2008 10:39 AM

ABC News' Claire Shipman took a look at sexism and the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, this morning on GMA.

Check it out.

Claire also made mention of the Women's Media Center and its video "Sexism May Sell, But I'm Not Buying It!" which you can watch HERE.

For a counterpoint, check out Peggy Noonan's "Sex and the Sissy," where she writes, "If Golda Meir, a woman of not only proclaimed but actual toughness, heard about Golda nutcrackers, she would have bought them by the case and given them away as party favors."

For the record, the other day on Fox News Channel Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said he owned a Hillary Nutcracker. Is that sexist?

That's Hillary's campaign manager for you.

Maybe Hillary's campaign against sexism should begin by cleaning up her own house.

68. Thats why the election is being investigated for racism by the UN
Edited on Fri May-30-08 06:54 PM by muryan
A special U.N. human rights investigator will visit the United States this month to probe racism, an issue that has forced its way into the race to secure the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

The United Nations said Doudou Diene would meet federal and local officials, as well as lawmakers and judicial authorities during the May 19-June 6 visit

"The special rapporteur will...gather first-hand information on issues related to racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance," a U.N. statement said on Friday.

His three-week visit, at U.S. government invitation, will cover eight cities -- Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Race has become a central issue in the U.S. election cycle because Sen. Barack Obama, the frontrunner in the battle for the Democratic nomination battle, stands to become the country's first African American president.

83. I don't see what the problem is. We're already known as being assholes.
And near as I can tell, there's not a whole lot of global outrage over the treatment of women in -- say -- Afghanistan or, hey! India, where women are doused in kerosene and set on fire. (The groom's family has already collected the dowry, who needs the chick?)

But yeah, I'm really disturbed about the global reputation of the U.S. on the whole women's rights front. I'm certain the rest of the world is utterly aghast.

You're an intelligent person, why don't you try thinking some of this stuff through?

Peace,

95. I hear America singing...
Her varied carols I hear. These comments clarify how this all came about:

From Texas on, Obama waged a non-stop character attack on Hillary that dominated the headlines.

My problem now is that I not only do not trust Obama, but I don't want to be a part of a group that pushed this type of smear campaign to win.

Race is an issue because the Obama people knew how to play it. All they needed were a handful of the Villagers and a compliant MSM to hold their disbelief and those pretend charges became fact. Seeing the hatred spew forth on blogs friendly to Obama is disgusting. Putting this support behind an unprepared and inexperienced candidate who has so many holes in is resume as to beg an answer is deeply puzzling.

Via Politico, the Pew Research Center has a new report, available here, finding 49% of white women and 35% of Democratic white women now have a negative perception of Obama. Politico summarizes:

Forty-nine percent of white women view Obama unfavorably, while only 43 percent hold a favorable opinion. In February, 36 percent of these women viewed Obama unfavorably, while 56 percent had a positive perception of the likely Democratic nominee.

Over the same period, Democratic white women's negative view of Obama increased from 21 percent to 35 percent, while their positive view decreased from 72 percent to 60 percent — roughly the same rate as white women overall.

For months now I have believed that the GOP wanted Obama to win all along - b/c they knew that Hillary could beat McCain.

I am absolutely lost if Hillary doesn't win the nomination. I can't abide an Obama presidency. So I guess I will work and support John McCain. I don't see we have much choice really. Its not so much an issue of revenge, or protest. Its a genuine concern that Obama is more of a threat to this country than McCain. I may not like McCain, I have a lot of reservations about the Supreme Court nominees, and the war, but Obama is just dangerously inexperienced and inept. It really does become an issue of who is the lesser of two evils. I just don't understand how it came to this. I don't understand how the DNC can allow this. And how they can't see or hear our voices.

Its incredible how the neo-liberals have mischaracterized the Clintons and have blindly supported Obama and the Rovian tactics that have been used during this primary election season. All of the critical articles Conason has written about Rove over the last 8 years and he still doesn't get it that Axelrove has used the same tactics—-attacking the character and the strengths of the opponent

Now the neo-liberal, far-left have become the fanatical fringe spewing hatred. It seems that the neo-liberals have taken the extremist far-right hate tactics into their playbooks and they cannot even see that they have done so—-at their own short-sighted ridiculousness and peril—especially for the future of our democracy and America.

117. Half the party: "Misogyny!!" The other half: "Racism!!"
One hears more about the misogyny accusations since Hillary is losing, but if she manages to secure the nomination, we can rest assured that those slinging "racism" accusations will take over from the "misogyny" purveyors.

Now I realize that the repubs avoid this by running white male candidates, but is there something about our party that lends to the kind of division that we are faced with now? How do we get ourselves into such situations?
