Rep. Bachmann Uses Fake George Washington Prayer To Bash Obama
What is a day without multiple Michelle Bachmann posts?

It is a day without insanity. Got to have insanity. The voters in her district are certifiable. Colbert needs to visit that district.

By Chris Rodda

Just a week before her now infamous inaccurate dating of the last swine flu outbreak, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann spit out a few more bits of historical hogwash, including a fake George Washington prayer, to bash the president.

On April 21, the very same day that she enlightened us all with her scientific analysis of CO2, Bachmann also took to the House floor to rant about Obama's statement in Turkey that the United States is not a Christian nation, and the covering up of the gold "IHS" inscription, a monogram that symbolizes Jesus' name, behind where he was standing for his speech at Georgetown University.

Before getting to the fake Washington prayer, Bachmann, referring to Obama's statement in Turkey, shared her thoughts about Abraham Lincoln:

"I wonder, Mr. Speaker, if President Abraham Lincoln, one of President Obama's heroes, would have said overseas that he believed America was a nation of secularists..."

Well, Obama, of course, didn't say America is a nation of secularists either, so I don't know what the hell Bachmann was talking about there.

Bachmann then proceeded to spew out a fake Washington prayer found on numerous Christian nationalist websites, compounding the lie by attributing this prayer to Washington's inaugural address, something that even the Christian nationalist history revisionists aren't stupid enough to try to get away with. . . .http://www.pubrecord.org/commentary/879-rep-bachmann-uses-fake-george-washington-prayer-to-bash-obama.html

1. Keep it comin', Michelle Bachmann!
You're doing a heck of a job reminding people just why they dislike Republicans!

3. I'm beginning to think she's doing this on purpose.
I mean, come on, this all is just too much, even for Bachmann.

What is this "Christian nationalist" movement? I don't like the sound of that. What if they've decided to create a parallel, alternate, Christowacko version of American history with the goal of eventually supplanting real history in the books once the truth passes out of living memory? Maybe she thinks of herself as laying the groundwork for this, pioneer style.

Or I don't know. Maybe she is just an idiot.

10. She been this nutty a long time.
People are just starting to pay attention to her (laughter on the left and approval on the right), and the media is starting to realize that sticking a microphone in her mouth leads to ratings.

22. For the scoop on the Talibornagain version of US history, go to Theocracy Watch online...
... and have an entertaining hour or two following the links and reading the articles.

Among other things, there really IS a "parallel, alternate ... version of American history". It appears in textbooks for home schoolers, on calendars that list the date when George Washington was "born again" (they made that one up out of whole cloth), and of course is circulated in endless email spam. When they talk about having "an army of Christian soldiers ready to rise up" at the call, they are in dead earnest, and the home school and religious-themed charter school movements are all part of the plan.

Michelle Bachman is a wacko, but she has a lot of company in the Republican base.

Theocracywatch.org is a great resource.

23. There's almost no such thing as bad publicity for Republicans.
Bachmann may never have had to learn to be smart, but we don't have to assume she's actually this stupid/crazy, either. Her drooling tinfoiler schtick seems to be working fairly well for her.

I'm sure she knows that as a fairly pretty woman, she could be the next Sarah Palin/Katherine Harris, and is eager to try her luck.

Despite the religious references he used to spice his political discourse.

12. He felt that events controlled him; he did not control events. Deist? Probably.
He had a mystic sense, and looking at his life, and the timing of his greatness, I sense some mystery, myself. From his Second Inaugural (read the whole thing; it's - well, no words to describe it):

"One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union even by war, while the Government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it.

Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with or even before the conflict itself should cease. Each looked for an easier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding. Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.

It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. "Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh."

If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him?

Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."

20. Indeed. I'm starting to rethink Jindal/Palin 2012.
Jindal/Bachmann might be even more entertaining. Then if they win, Palin will be available to serve as Secretary of State.
