Obama’s budget eliminates funding for abstinence education programs.

Obama’s budget eliminates funding for abstinence education programs.

Keeping with a campaign pledge “not continue to fund abstinence-only programs,” President Obama’s 2010 budget — further details of which were released today — cuts funding for “Community-Based Abstinence Education” and several other abstinence-education programs (p. 491):

Indeed, abstinence programs have been shown time and again to be unsuccessful in preventing teen pregnancies, which in fact rose under President Bush. (HT: Ben Smith)

1. Good. Eliminate funding for ineffective programs. No evidence these programs work. Waste of money.

3. The New York Times had a very good article on this today.
The reader's comments are excellent, even one from a Christian mother who home schools her children.

5. Finally. Contraception, goddamnit.
Teaching abstinence doesn't keep kids from having sex--it keeps them from having safe sex.

It's like Mike Birbiglia said: "You put a bunch of dorky 19-year-old coeds in a dorm and you ban condoms--they're not going to say 'Well, I guess since we don't have condoms, we'll just play Pictionary!'"

16. Abstinence has never truly existed. Humans explore sex in some way starting at an early age.
Birth control and STD prevention are the key problems we need to focus on.
