Donald Trump on Miss California: Same as Barack Obama (stance on gay marriage)
President Barack Obama ended up in the middle of an unlikely controversy this morning — the debate over Miss California’s position on gay marriage.

At a press conference addressing Carrie Prejean’s disputed title in the Miss USA competition, pageant owner Donald Trump compared Prejean’s stated views on gay marriage to Obama’s.

“It's the same answer that the president of the United States gave,” Trump said. “She gave an honorable answer. She gave an answer from her heart.”

In her own remarks moments later, Prejean echoed Trump’s statement, telling reporters: “The president of the United States, the secretary of state, and many Americans agree with me in this belief.”

the "owner" of the pageant, and was, therefore, "the decider". He didn't just speak out to get attention.

22. Which is why no one should be surprised by his decision
After all, who the hell knows the name of the actual winner?

Prejean was a publicity goldmine (I expect her to be out and about more than the offical winner) and as a result of the photos Trump can basically shake any pretense that Miss USA isn't just about T&A and sex up the show even more next year.

42. I think Prejean is the ultimate winner esp. compared to the actual winner
Prejean effectively now has a career as spokesperson for any right wing cause that wants to hire her and I'm sure there will be no shortage of groups lining up to hire her as a speaker at their events.

At this point, if I were the actual winner I think I'd be a bit pissed.

64. Perez Hilton is the real winner here, let's not kid ourselves
He knew this would blow up into a big issue when he asked the question--not that it shouldn't have been asked, but beauty queens are not rocket scientists or future judges. Hilton has milked this for all its worth, which is his stock and trade.

3. Trump is a POS. The issue isn't her answer. The issue is that she has actively gotten involved in
the anti-gay marriage movement. That's the difference between her and President Obama. She is actively working against equal rights. Trump is blurring the issue and looking for more publicity. I knew that this would be his decision because it would cause the most controversy.

43. I think that's false. Her critics began criticizing her before her involvement with that group
Besides, a poll released today found that 58% of Californians think it's ok for her to appear in ads campaigning against gay marriage. I disagree with her but that's the public sentiment according to Survey USA:

21. Obama wrote a letter
opposing prop 8 that the campaign did not use to their advantage. I agree that he definitely wasn't as "vocal" in his opposition to it as he should have been , but the campaign against prop 8 definitely could have utilized him better too.

Both Obama and Carrie's stances are wrong. Obama hasn't said that he is being persecuted or tempted by the devil by getting ASKED about gay marriage though...yet anyway.

23. It was a group of straight Democratic advisors
that did not use that letter, which was not sent to No on 8, by the way. The letter was going to be problematic, due to the mixed message he was sending. While he 'opposed Prop 8' in written words, he was also all over in modern media style sound bite land saying he opposed gay marriage because he's a Christian. So while I myself probably would have tried to use that letter somehow, it sure would not have been easy, as it was a far weaker tool than the gifts he'd given to the other side all through his campaign. He did not respond to requests for stronger and recorded statements against Prop 8. That is just the way it is. He could easily have been far more clear, had he wished to be, and it would have been extremely helpful.

Both of them are wrong. I never knew if it was advisors or the Prop 8 campaign though that didn't use the letter. I remember it being posted about earlier and no one knew at the time why it wasnt' used. Where did you read that? I don't doubt that it is true, I am just curious because I had always wondered.

Anyway, I'm not surprised about Donald letting her keep the crown. He loves this shit. But she used the press conference to make herself into a victim who "shall not be silenced" , even though that had nothing to do with what the press conference was supposed to be about.

32. I'm with you as well
I'm the last person you will hear defending any of the GLBT political groups in power these days...too weak in the knee for my taste. I've had the same reaction in more than one state, around more than one issue.
I'm trying to remember the name of the group that handled that letter...something 'Street' I think. I think I read about it, but I might have heard more directly at the time. But it is always the same thing, with all of them. With the letter I can understand the position a bit, and many people, many, who normally would have been fully out against 8 were understandably focused on the big event, defeating McCain. Much energy was given to Obama, as it would have been to any Democrat, I don't blame him.
California is my home state, and the thing that drove me away was apathy on the part of too many people. The one thing that the Prop 8 mess has done that I am happy about is that it woke a few people up, there are some good people who have actually realized that they failed to pay attention when it meant something. They really wish they'd done more, before. For once they see their part in the problem. Part of it is a now disproved faith in California as the bastion of all things liberal and cutting edge. Many many people really thought 8 had no chance in CA, so they didn't do much.
In some ways, Carrie is the Miss California they deserve at this time. You know? A fake version of the old CA beauty, corrupt and bigoted below a surgical veneer of cosmetic fashion. Not a bad choice for CA 2009. Sadly.

Furthermore, did Obama strut around on national TV in a skimpy bathing suit with fake boobs hanging out while pretending to have better morals than the rest of us?

And I guarantee Prejean didn't vote for Obama, if she bothered to vote at all, and the sexist Trump endorsed McCain....and now suddenly they care what Obama thinks?

The hypocrisy with these people never stops!

So who care what she thinks...And BTW she never said her "morals" are better than anyone else's. She just stated her stupid belief, and left it at that. Last I checked, having a bigoted beliefs is not against the law. So I think the frothing here over Prejean is just projection that should be directed at Obama. She was asked a question, she gave an honest question. She is not the first to not agree with Gay Marriage, just ask the President. Sounds like the "Thought Police" is going after her becasue she had the audacity to give the "wrong" answer. Not very "Progressive" IMHO. I believe in free speech, even if I detest what is said. And as I said before, who gives a rats ass about her opinion anyway? Its the people who affect change that matters to me.

46. Exactly, Politicians have to worry about what the majority thinks, Miss California doesn't
The fact is with opposition to gay marriage still polling higher then support for gay marriage it's still a very risky move to try to run a national campaign while shouting "I fully support gay marriage". In more and more blue states it's certainly become possible to run a campaign shouting your support for gay marriage everywhere, and it'll get that way at the national level with time (I'd guess in around a decade), but until purple states start legalizing gay marriage or seriously considering/debating it we're not there yet.

Models like Miss California however don't have to care or worry about what the public thinks, especially if they don't even seem to care about losing their crown/title anymore (which I honestly think Prejean didn't care about anymore given some of her recent actions, like skipping events she was supposed to attend as the reigning Miss California).

48. Trump's comparison of Miss California and Obama on gay marriage rated as "true" by independent site
Excerpt, from Politifact.com, winner of a Pulitzer prize for its coverage of the 2008 elections:

Here's the part of Prejean's answer that matters: "I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

Controversy followed.

So let's see how that stacks up to Obama's stated position on same-sex marriage:

* "You know, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman." (an interview with ABC's Jake Tapper, June 16, 2008)

* "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian, it's also a sacred union. You know, God's in the mix." (an interview with Rev. Rick Warren, Aug. 16, 2008)

** "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage." (an MTV interview, Nov. 1, 2008)

Note that Trump referred to Prejean's answer to Perez Hilton's question during the pageant.

49. Silly statement, since Obama and Miss CA were not asked the SAME question.
SHE was asked about one or more states passing gay marriage bills, allowing gay marriage, and should states allow it...or something like that.

HE was asked whether he believes gays should be allowed to marry.

SHE answered that in accordance with the way she was raised, marriage should be between a man and a woman, "no offense to anyone out there," blah blah blah.

HE answered that he personally believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, but that he is against a constitutional amendment prohibiting it, and he is in favor of civil unions whether the legal protections of marriage can be achieved by gay people (or something like that).

These opinions are interesting, but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter WHAT either of their opinion is on the subject.

50. No, it matters a lot what the opinion of the POTUS is.
These opinions are interesting, but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter WHAT either of their opinion is on the subject.

He is the number one citizen of this country. His opinions are very important although of course the opinions of others are also important.

51. Well, his op. matters in one respect: he will veto any attempt at a
constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, he said. Other than that, it doesn't matter one bit whether he is for or against gay marriage.

58. Really enjoying the contortions
of people trying to simultaneously criticise this dingbat girl and defend Obama's position. So far the efforts aren't that convincing, though. I know whose position is more worthy of our attention, do you?

"You're fired because you entered the contest knowing there were semi-nude photos of you. And I'm deducting your boob job from your severance pay."

69. slow is good...
Team Obama is taking baby steps along the political path to ensure that after the shock wears off (elections) that he can push forth his agenda, kudos to him. Remember when bj Bill tried to push health care reform too fast.

71. This stunt is going to bite The Donald squarely on The Ass
Donald Trump does not think about the big picture. He only thinks about the benefit in the here-and-now, never considering the consequences of his actions. (Perhaps that's why he's filed for bankruptcy so many times....)

GLBT folks spend lots of their hard-earned money in the travel and resort industries. I would LOVE to see an all-out mass boycott of all of Trump's resorts and real estate by travel and resort organizations, especially those who cater to the GLBT demographic. (I for one would welcome such an event and would wholeheartedly participate. )

I also predict his actions will not be looked upon favorably by many in the Hollywood jet-set crowd, regardless of sexual orientation.
