Perhaps they are delaying the release of the Torture Photos
in order to get the agenda, for the moment, off the wars and onto his domestic agenda, to recapture the news cycle from Cheney.

After all, the torture stuff isn't going to suddenly just disappear.

Just a thought.

That may be why Richard Wolfe claimed that the photos will eventually be released.

This guy plays chess while the rest of the country, including many of us here on DU, are playing Go Fish...

Just a thought.

1. I hope you're right...
Otherwise, we are not getting the transparent Presidency we were promised.

Now, I am not so naive as to expect that he will always follow through just as promised during the campaign...

But still.

This is a big issue, and I am very disappointed (so far) in his actions. Or should I say, inactions.

3. Well he can't block them
Edited on Wed May-13-09 07:59 PM by Uzybone
he can delay and take it up the courts, but he can't destroy or block them. They will come out. I don't care either way since I already know what we will see.

The President is in a tough postition here IMO, when all the military brass all the way down the chain is begging you not to release them, it has to be a tough call.

I do not think this is a chess/checkers moment, I think this is pure political pragmatism.

4. Which is why this is a chess moment....
Pragmatism is basing your actions on factual information and removing the subjective from the equation.

5. Obama wants
....a judge to tell him he has to release them. That way he comes clean. No politics, just following the law. It is quite evident. The judge told Bush he had to release the vids, now to make sure, he wants the judge to tell him the same thing.

7. I believe that is his plan...
It also defuses the situation and let's the domestic agenda at least have a chance to recapture the news cycle.

He wins on Domestic Policy. The GOP has a fighting chance when it comes to Foreign Policy and keeping the country safe.

10. I have that suspicion, too--also it lets him say he's
concerned about how the release of these pictures will possibly endanger the troops which imply the following:

1) They're pretty bad.

2) He is concerned for their welfare over what the torture-supporters will call "partisanship".

3) Torture actually does make us less safe and can be a recruiting tool for terror (in your face, Karl Rove.)

If the issue is pressed and he has no choice--then the photos will have a different kind of impact. I've said it before, but as explicit as the torture memos are, many people only "get it" when they see it.

13. It takes more than a few months to reverse all that happened in the
previous administration.

I truly believe he has an agenda with a time line that he feels he was elected to execute. He is not going to let them co-opt his mission.

I am also confident that he will address the wrongs before he is through.

14. If this helps save one soldier's life, then he has done his job as commander in chief.
Edited on Wed May-13-09 11:01 PM by FrenchieCat
I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to tell President Obama that a Soldier was captured and tortured in the exact same way as those depicted in pics that would have been released....if that would happen.

Sorry, but our right to see photos that I can already imagine are trumped for the time being....

But of course, I'm just an Obama groupie, not a serious activist out to see all of the truth in freeze frames and bask in their wonderful glory while I stick my finger in the former administration's eyes cause I can. :eyes:

15. It may also have to do with the underlying issues in the particular motion in the particular court
case involved.

I am glad that I don't have to worry about a lot of nefarious altnerative theories by the POTUS.

Although some others here will worry.

release the photos? So far, none that I've seen.
