Truth be told.. I just don't know what is right or wrong
about releasing or not releasing the pictures.

I just do not have enough facts.

I am stymied.

I did not want to see anymore pictures of torture, the ones we have seen are seared into my brain.

But I do want accountability.

I want an end to conflict in the Iraq/Afghan theater, but I do not want our troops while still in that region put at even more risk than what they are in.

I just don't know.

Most people shoot their cyber-mouths off about everything cuz they think they know it all when in fact they don't. They could learn from your example.

6. If this were Bush fighting the release, I'd be crying cover-up.
I don't have enough info to muster a different reaction in this case. We do need accountability, which doesn't seem to be on the way.

7. I am torn too. I want the photos released but sort of understand his reasoning behind it.
You are not the only one, Peacetrain. Your posts are always so thoughtful.

14. I know, but at least its not a knee jerk reaction but a thought out one.
I imagine that is how Prez Obama feels right now.

This is a very emotional issue for me, and I'm just about jumping on President Obama over this one, but the truth is, I don't have all the facts. I don't want to see the pictures, either, but I want them released. I'm concerned that not releasing the photos is the beginning of a white wash. There's no doubt that the military commanders and others in government have been heavily pressuring Obama not to release the photos, but I can't buy the, 'It will endanger the troops more' argument. I don't think there is anything more you can do to endanger troops than to place them in an unjustifiable warl and give them instructions to torture and carpet bomb civilians. That is a bullshit argument, really. The world knows we torture, and to this point, they don't see us doing anything that shows the U.S. believes these were atrocities, or that we are in any way willing to punish the perpetrators of these crimes, nor is there any reassurance that we will not allow this to happen again. Simply saying, 'American does not torture' is not enough, and almost laughable. It rings false, because Bush said the same thing, and we did torture, and we presently detain and we are still bombing civilians in the Middle East. Nothing appears to have changed at all, really.

12. And that is why we elected Barack Obama---to make those tough calls.
I believe he made the right one.

Everyday, a new "outrage" here on DU. I am almost sorry I bothered to donate again. This constant outrage of the day is making me come here less and less.

He has shown a long range vision and good judgment that surpasses just about anyone I have ever seen in my 64 years on this earth. Of course he is only human. However, time and time again, he has been shown to have made the right decisions during the campaign for instance, when the hand wringing was non-stop.

Give the man some time. I do believe that he will accomplish most of what the naysayers want over time, in his way, for the good of all.
