Martin Sheen on the President (BBC tonight)
I know he supported Obama in the end, after Bill Richardson dropped out, but because he's seriously anti-abortion I wondered how enthusiastic a supporter Martin Sheen would be of the President. Well, he was on the Jonathan Ross Show tonight (BBC) and said:

"We have this brilliant young man who is a blessing, a grace, not just to our country but to the world - I'm happy as Larry and I thank God for him, Barack Obama."

And the audience cheered loudly :-) Nice.

What do you all make of Sheen?

10. Oi!!!
You forgot:

The legend that was Larry the Lamb (from my favourite UK kiddies' show, Toytown).

(I liked Larry Hagman too, though.....does that make me a bad person?)

Seriously, Martin's always been pretty liberal as long as I've known of his leanings - his role on The West Wing seemed to be in keeping with that, not just an actor playing a role.

I liked his turn as JFK, even if it wasn't a strong resemblance; I felt like he wanted to pay homage.

His quote also offsets the bad taste left by hearing Jon Voight proclaim "Thank God for Rudy Giuliani!"

.... leading this country.

(for a time there I just went into denial and started pretending HE was REALLY the President! lol)

11. Well girlfriend, all you needed to do is ask me....
.... because I'm ALSO "seriously anti-abortion" and well ...... you KNOW who you're talking to, bring on the photo threads!!! ;)

(For clarification, I'm against abortion from an idealistic standpoint but fully recognize that the genie out of the bottle and there's no going back now. I think our time and energy should be devoted to helping make sure women get pregnant if and when they're ready.)

16. I worded that abysmally
Edited on Fri May-22-09 08:44 PM by Jackeens
I don't know, maybe I should have said Sheen is 'anti-choice'? I have yet to meet a single person on earth who is 'pro-abortion', just people who recognise that in dire circumstances it's the only way out. I'd guess we're all, at heart, seriously 'anti-abortion', but sometimes there is no other way....in my COMPLETELY humble opinion!

18. Not me.....
.... I dont find it excusable EVER .... but unlike my fellow pro-lifers, I know it's going to happen whether it's legal or not and, like I said, the genie is out of the bottle. Our time and energy are better spent HELPING the poor girls to begin with.

And of course ALSO like my fellow pro-lifers, I know the sancticity of life does not END at the doors to the state prison. ;)

I was 'anti-abortion' until a beloved 16-year-old in my life was raped, and left pregnant. She felt 'it' was like a "cancer" inside her. Her words. It changed my view forever. But I'll never, ever doubt the sincerity of those who oppose abortion with all their hearts, I understand their revulsion. But, as I said, sometimes I think it's the only way. The 16-year-old had an abortion, and there started her recovery. She's 22 now and doing well.

..... who was raped 17 years ago ..... her son is currently trying to decide what college to attend.

He's so smart, I always said he'd be the first African American President.

But someone came along and stole his glory. :)

I'd love to meet him too. I don't agree with his stance on abortion, but I have endless admiration for his activism on so many other issues. He proudly declared in the interview that he had been arrested over 60 times for peaceful protests - what a man! Love him.

Edited on Fri May-22-09 08:54 PM by lunatica
He is totally down to earth and will actually have a conversation with you. I talked to him years ago and it was about Al Gore and the stolen election and whether he would run again in 2004. He has a great deal of admiration and support for Gore, but he insisted that Gore wouldn't run again, even though he too wished he would. He was right.

Martin Sheen acts like an ordinary citizen, but still he gets that he's a celebrity but to him that means he can bring attention to progressive causes. I didn't get a sense of any conceit at all in him.

Barack Obama should be honored to get his endorsement.
