Michelle Misses Life Without Commentary

Being 'first lady' can really suck. Good luck, Michelle and hang tough!

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - First lady Michelle Obama misses life without the constant commentary, but says she does what works for her since there's always someone who thinks she could have done something better.

In the latest issue of Time magazine, Mrs. Obama says it's difficult to watch President Barack Obama burdened by the world's problems, and that White House life has been the "greatest single benefit" for her family.

She also revealed the most unexpected bit of advice from her predecessors: go to Camp David early and often.

"It's just one place you can go where you're completely ... where you feel some level of freedom and an ability to breathe," she said of the presidential retreat in Maryland, in an interview for the magazine's cover story. "I think every single first lady felt that that was an important resource, an important thing for the health of the family."

ER: The poor dear...

1. Guess what WE didn't know!
'Mrs. Obama and daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, have visited Camp David three times, including a weeklong stay during spring break in April.'

2. I think Camp David was dramatically improved by LBJ because previous families
thought it sucked and was dark and depressing.

I'm really glad Michelle's mother is in DC. What a great break it must be to have her there.

Depression and loneliness are recurring themes in histories of first ladies. More recently, first ladies have made real effort to escape the White House. Eleanor Roosevelt got an apt. in NYC while in the White House. Bess Truman bailed on Harry and went back to Independence for extended periods of time and JackieK insisted that they get a house in VA.

A famous Shangri La/Camp David scene:
ER: Everybody say 'cheese'!
FDR: Cheeeeeese!
WSC: Wha'?

8. She liked baseball. But,yes, she doesn't seem to have been a fun date.

She bailed on Harry and the White House, the first time after she was totally pissed she wasn't consulted on dropping The Bomb. I don't know her view on that. He did, however, consult Eleanor. He called her to DC in June '45 to discuss it. Newspapers said they discussed Democratic Party Politics.

She also disappeared for extended periods around the holidays. He spent a Christmas Eve by himself in the WH and flew back to Independence that night.

The dramatic decline in time and access places a strain on the best marriages.

4. Well, she had a choice.
She wanted to be first lady and so far she's had it pretty easy compared to how other first ladies were treated.

16. Wrong. Her HUSBAND wanted to be PRESIDENT.
I seriously doubt she asked Barack to run for office just to make her the First Lady.

And 'having it easy' is a matter of perspective. Hillary chose to put herself in the political spotlight with healthcare, so criticism comes with the territory when you want take a public policy-setting role.

Meanwhile, the RW couldn't wait to turn Michelle into a big liability for her husband. The idiot wingnut contingent still tries to label her as the 'angry, America-hating black woman' as Rush, O'Reilly and their ilk would have them believe. And there were way too many people hopeful for their own motives that the smear lie known as the 'Whitey Tape' existed.

18. You're kidding right? This woman has had negativity thrown at her since the primaries.

And like others have stated it was her husband's CHOICE.

10. I Can't Imagine
What happens when she wants to just pick up and go to Target or shop? That would be a tough thing for me.

11. Well, so long as it is spontaneous, she probably still can, but she would be
discouraged from doing so and it's still not the same.

Like Bubba's dropping into McDonald's. There's safety in spontenaiety - even if I can't spell it.

Though, things are MUCH tighter since Sept. 11th. I wish her well. It's claustrophobic living in the White House, that's what most prez family members say. Again, I'm glad her mother is there.

he spent time in DC as Senator, and before THAT, a lot of time in Spfld! I'd consider that NO LIFE!

12. Fun commentary on Shelley O's fashion sense...
When it's time to get away from the politics of it all, do go and enjoy Project RunGay guys' blog ripping fashion. http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/search?q=shelley+o

Guess it got lost in the capitation of most of this thread. Michelle, besides being brilliant, is helping to redefine fashion. It's all round a good thing.
