Anyone hearing Turley on MSNBC? He continues to come across as arrogant and pompus
Edited on Tue May-26-09 09:41 AM by Thrill
Basically saying the crap we've heard from these conservatives about Sotomayor. The not smart crap. Her opinions don't show the intellect for the Supreme Court?

I fell out with him during the Clinton stuff. And now he continues show he just thinks he's smarter than anyone else. What an arrogant prick.

1. And, thankfully, he's usually wrong about what happens in the real world.
He went on and on about the Bush crimes and subpoenas and nothing ever came of anything. Wrong. Wrong and wrong again.

2. But oh, he's a "Constitutional Scholar"! :eyes:
He's been quoted of late in his concern over the *policy* the president has (not) for handling detainees.

I personally think he's an asswipe and I have no use for his opinions.

He's an MSM shill first and foremost.

13. What folks don't realize about lawyers (he is that first) is that they

that assholes are attracted to law school. I have met some nice lawyers, but they do seem thin on the ground, and some of them came to the law as a second career.

10. He's repeating the ugly New Republic whisper campaign against her "intellect and temperament"
As Glenn Greenwald has just put it earlier today:

It is very encouraging that Obama ignored the ugly, vindictive, and anonymous smear campaign led by The New Republic's Jeffrey Rosen and his secret cast of cowardly Eminent Liberal Legal Scholars of the Respectable Intellectual Center. People like that, engaging in tactics of that sort, have exerted far too much influence on our political culture for far too long, and Obama's selection of one of their most recent targets both reflects and advances the erosion of their odious influence. And Obama's choice is also a repudiation of the Jeffrey-Rosen/Ben-Wittes/Stuart-Taylor grievance on behalf of white males that, as Dahlia Lithwick put it, "a diverse bench must inevitably be a second-rate bench."

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/05/26/sotomayor/

I might ask what Professor Turley's intellectual and temperamental qualifications are to assert such judgmental opinion on the new Supreme Court nominee? Perhaps he's just not a Yankees fan.

21. If confirmed,
Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice in 100 years, and more overall judicial experience than anyone confirmed for the Court in the past 70 years. Judge Richard C. Wesley, a George W. Bush appointee to the Second Circuit, said "Sonia is an outstanding colleague with a keen legal mind. She brings a wealth of knowledge and hard work to all her endeavors on our court. It is both a pleasure and an honor to serve with her."

Something that Turley has yet to do. As someone said, I was through with after his behavior during the Clinton impeachment. It's been disappointing to see this man showcased on Countdown and Rachel Maddow's show. It was disappointing that they fell for him.

29. He says she has a "lack of intellectual depth", she won't be "the equal of Scalia"
Thurgood Marshall did not have "massive intellectual impact on the Court" but he "understands liberals' joy at her being a woman and an Hispanic."

What patronizing arrogance.

34. I've liked Turley, but I'm disappointed with him
about saying these things about Justice Sotomayor.

He did the Thurgood Marshall thing on NPR a little while ago too, on the Dian Rheim show. (Diane's not there today.)

He basically had to insult Justice Marshall to say that she wasn't up to intellectual snuff.

I've been basically blind to this aspect of him, but damn. No more.

35. Here's what Turley just said that proves he doesn't get it:
"Questions about empathy and temperament are less important than whether this person is going to have a profound impact-to help shape the court-and this nominee really doesn't have a history to suggest that."

What a snob. And I heard other people saying just the opposite (about the second part of his comment.)

49. Turley is an snob, IMHO. I read an article where he was talking about his testimony RE impeachment
of Clinton. He talked about it as though he knew that it was pointless but wow! how awesome was it that all these scholars were sitting around discussing it. He even said that you could almost see the founding fathers!

Another expert was on that disagreed with Turley and said that you don't need to have these long, drawn out arguments against segregation, etc. when you can whittle your argument down. Turley, I think, disagrees. He likes the type of judge who can write a 150 page paper on why the president should go hatless or a 500 word opinion on why the president could be impeached for telling Congress he's a natural blond.

how Republicans will get away with saying that about someone who graduated summe cum laude from Princeton and went on to edit the Yale Law Journal. That's when Turley went on to diss Thrugood Marshall! The implication was both Sotomayor and Thurgood Marshall are/were affirmative action picks, unlike the brilliant Justice Scalia.

Or does he not realize that "empathy" is a quality that might help a justice persuade others to his/her point of view, as well as interpret the law in a compassionate, sensible manner?
