The funny thing is, the Republicans will fuck themselves over if they put up a stink.
Because if it appears they're railroading the first Hispanic Justice, they can kiss goodbye any vote in the future generations.

Now I know Pres. Obama didn't do this for political reasons, but it's going to have an impact.

We'll see how the Republicans do this, but they've got to be careful, or their hole will only get deeper.

1. They really will mess it up by opposing someone who seems reasonable and logical.
On top of the Hispanic thing. :)

Correct on both counts. They should...keep their powder dry!
Better luck next time!

19. I have a close friend who was a co-worker who happens to be Puerto
Rican and from the Bronx originally. Their attempt to fluster or talk down to her will be met by an intelligent, logical smackdown that will hurt. As my friend would say, "It's in the DNA." I have a feeling Sotomayor has been down this road before when she was a youth, and rose above it. They won't succeed.

2. Most Republican presidential candiates aren't senators
and can easily side-step even giving an opinion.

4. You'd think, but once that tag is put around the party, it sticks.

The Republicans are already losing support from the Hispanic community. Look at Sen. McCain, who only four years ago was lionized by many Hispanics because of his immigration platform.

Well that didn't transfer over to the GE.

In fact, he did more poorly among Hispanics than Bush.

If that continues, if the party appears to be anti-Hispanic (which is slowly happening), you better believe it's going to trickle down to every race.

5. Especially when Hispanic Dems like myself go around our churches and neighborhoods saying, "Did you
hear what they did to the first Hispanic SC nominee?"

6. "he did more poorly among Hispanics than Bush."
Yes. But he did more poorly amongst almost every group and in almost every state.

9. True.
But that was at least the upside to McCain's campaign, at least from what I heard.

He was going to get the support from many Hispanics, which would put the West in play and deliver him the White House.

Didn't happen.

It's a trend that suggests the Republicans are losing these voters at an extremely high rate. Going hard after Sotomayor will only drive them further away.

3. I'm not relishing it. But imagine the sight of a bunch of old white guys just grilling
a very pleasant, experienced, and intelligent Hispanic woman. It is not going to look good for them on the TEEVEE.

11. Everything in Washington, D.C. is done for political reasons.
The thing is that it is the right political reason. Obama is a political genius. I do not agree with him on everything but it appears he takes everything into consideration. It's chess not checkers.

earlier by a republican president: George the First.

Haha. Let's see them work their way out of this one.

C'mon. If they didn't fuck themselves over, they wouldn't qualify as Republicans these days.

Myopically self-destructive is a basic requirement for the shallow end of the gene pool. They've been reactionary for so long they can't see the sheer comedy in thinking "activist" is some kind of epithet.

13. I like the pick but if you don't think that Obama didn't calculate the politics of it
then you are mistaken.

He should caluclate the politics of it, but he shouldn't let the politics be the overriding concern.

And yes once again he has boxed the Republicans in. Expect to see Republicans from Texas, Florida, and Arizona love this candidate.

More Republican infighting.

Just like Christmas.

14. Republicans don't really care how deep the hole is.
Their world is created new every day. Yesterday never happened and tomorrow will be created new when it becomes today. They live in the moment for the next news show or press conference where they can spew any foolishness that comes to mind knowing tomorrow the lies will be as if they never existed.
