I was real close to Magna...~sigh~

That darn C+ in Calculus. :D

I know it doesn't belong here, but since most of my buds who post are here I figured I'd share my news with you. I just graduated today...although I didn't want to. Our guest speaker was Thelma Golden of the Studio Museum of Harlem, she's a curator.

It was raining, it was miserable...and they gave all of us Eco students our wrong satchel and I forgot to get my Honours tassles, but overall it was great.

Sorry, CCNY is The City College of New York. Yeah...Colin Powell is my Alum and way way way too many Nobel Laureates!!! :D

10. Nope. I'm actually going to France next year as part of my degree.
Edited on Thu May-28-09 12:05 PM by vaberella
Then I plan on putting my loans on deferment and moving to Korea to teach English for 2 years to save up money so I can pay off my loans. After those two years I plan on working towards my Phd. I have my heart set on Oxford University because they have a Development Studies Phd program that I want to get into.

My focus in school was around development.

My first BA was in Political Science and International Relations
This one is a MA/BA Economics (specialization in Economic Development), BA Anthropology focusing on Political Economy and Development.

So that's my area. Then after all that I might settle in NY or just stay in England...my BA in Poli Sci was from a school in England (Middlesex University). But one never knows if some great development or urban planning programs open up, I might just stay in the US.

I don't like it when I hear people bragging about being in the same club with war criminals. I'm sure war criminals are A-OK with you since you're so willing to "move on" but unfortunately, I can't just "move on" from the biggest crimes ever committed in America.

I was one of the first people who actually didn't want him to endorse Candidate Obama. I don't like him one bit. I realize he's trying to make amends lately, but years late and Bush was given the chance to do a lot of damage for an extra 4. Some damage almost irreversible and problematic for our current president.

Oh congrats to your niece. :toast:

Edited on Thu May-28-09 12:25 PM by CoffeeCat
Congratulations, now let's put you to work! :)

I have a degree in journalism and only a minor in economics--which means I know nothing, but
I'm interested in the economy.

If I may be so bold, can I pick your very knowledgeable and recently graduated brain? :)

Can you please tell us all...what is your take on the current state of the economy?

Are we in for really dire times, like near-Depression-like circumstances? Or, as the
media tells us, are things improving??

In your opinion, what are the most important economic indicators that signal a recovery (or dire times)
ahead? Should we be looking at unemployment numbers? GNP numbers? Housing foreclosures
and devaluation? All of the above? If the stock market is improving, does that indicate, at all,
that we're recovering?

I like looking at the Dry Baltic Index and other raw data--so I can get information without the spin.
My head is spinning from the spin.

Do you have any special Web sites, newspapers or magazines that you read to glean accurate economic news?

Thanks so much for any insight or expertise that you share with us. :)

Again, congratulations! What a milestone. :applause:

37. It's unfortunate...my focus is on Developmental Economics.
Edited on Thu May-28-09 01:05 PM by vaberella
That means, I know only basic rules of Keynesian Economics. My focus is on things like health economics, environmental economics, public policy, political economy, economic systems of development and the like.

ie, not so much the financial sector of economics.

I can comment on the Depression-like economics. That's misnomer in my eyes. The World economy was less connected unlike today. Yes nations were dependent on trade with each other. But when we consider the fact that debt is being sold on the market (and we're dependent on the credit market) and basically everything is a commodity from debt to a degree we have a major problem. I find that they use the term Depression is used to describe a certain depth of what we might face but it won't be like that.

I think the economy is recovering only for the wealthier nations. What has happened is that the developing nations were also trying to build themselves as players in the world economy. When we see the major set back that the Western economy has faced (which I do agree with is improving) it's as though the developing nation however just fell back several years because their products will not be bought by the Western nation as people turn to buying goods from their home country since their cheaper.

This actually will affect developed nations in the long run because the developing nations are seeing even more setbacks. For those developing nations that have not really entered into the world market system, they are actually safer in some respects (however those same countries are seen as a predatory nations (nations that feed off terrorizing their own constituents)).

All in all I would say that the economy is improving some what, and I do keep on top of the changes. However, my opinion on it is rudimentary compared to my interest in developmental economics.

Oh right, as for indicators. I look at the marginal income tax rates for married couples. And looking at it historically. Here's a site you can look at with great sources:http://www.truthandpolitics.org/

The stock market recovering doesn't say we're recovering, it just says that people are more confident in the market. And the stock market is different from the credit market which is what we need to be looking at---there's been a lot of confusion on that. That's as far as I go. I wouldn't look at devaluation since that happens for other reasons besides foreclosures. Plus, looking at the rate of foreclosures now as an indicator I find will lead people astray since most people will refrain from buying a house because they have no confidence in the housing market, ie interest rates and plans. Housing is just risky to bank on, during this economic climate.

I recommend speaking to poster no.1. She might have looked at the finance part of economics more which relates to your questions.

HTH

It took me 8 years to amass as many posts as you have in one, even though I check the site every day.

You must be really good at multitasking! Congrats on graduating! Sorry about the job market. I read recently that people graduating this year will still be worse off a decade from now than earlier grads, even if our economy recovers quickly.

67. BIG props and heartiest congratulations!
I wish I could go back to school - I so enjoyed my time in academia and it is one of only three things I have ever been good at, the others being writing about fancy audio equipment and playing bass guitar. Can't make a living at any of them and I'm too old and too broke these days to change course. :(

ENJOY and Party hearty, vabby! :toast: :woohoo:
