Daily Kos Diary: Obama Doesn't Mock Gay Rights Protestors at CA Fundraiser. (Updated)
Obama Doesn't Mock Gay Rights Protestors at CA Fundraiser. (Updated)
by AmbroseBurnside

Obama Doesn't Mock Gay Rights Protestors at CA Fundraiser. (Updated) Thu May 28, 2009 at 01:55:56 PM PDT
There is a diary on the Rec List now called "Obama Mocks Gay Rights Protestors at CA Fundraiser," and I hate to say it, but all those who recommended the diary got hoodwinked.

AmbroseBurnside's diary :: ::

Here is the "mocking" that President Obama is accused of spouting at the California gay and lesbian community. Prepare to be outraged!!!!

Video

For those who can't see the video, here is a transcript of the mocking:

There were some protesters out here. I could hear them-vaguely. I don't know what they were protesting. I think there was a group of them. But one of them started to chant "Obama, keep your promise" and I thought, that's fair. I don't know which promise that he was talking about. But I thought to myself, you know, I like that.

President Obama is not mocking anyone, he is basically saying that he is happy that people are holding his feet to the fire when it comes to him upholding his campaign promises.

And before anyone says "but, but, but, it was a gay rights protest that he's mocking," it was also a Code Pink and ANSWER protest as well:

...activists from CODEPINK and ANSWER LA will protest troops in Afghanistan and war funding outside the Beverly HIlton, where President Obama is attending a Democratic National Committee fundraiser.

So there it is, clear as day. Obama was responding to the myriad of different groups protesting for different causes. And he's happy to know people are pushing him to keep his promises.

We try to be reality-based here, so let's save our outrage for worthwhile causes instead of bullshit tomfoolery.

h/t to gatorbot for the video, h/t to seesmithrun for the transcript, h/t to taylormattd for the Code Pink/ANSWER protest link.

UPDATE! From some of the comments below, specifically from abwaan and aggregatescience, it looks like the "keep your promise" Obama was responding to might have come from those protesting that Obama should keep a campaign promise of recognizing the Armenian genocide.

1. Sad how even "we" cherry pick...
And manufacture things to be upset about... when in reality, there is plenty of ACTUAL wrongs to be upset about!

Honesty still means something, and I think we should hold our own feet to the fire and make damn well sure we're speaking the truth when we get whipped to a frenzy! It waters down all our legitimate concerns when we get caught up in this stupidity.

3. And since like 90 percent of the people protesting were GLBT
he had no idea who he was talking about.

Is he really that dense? Does he think we're really that dense? Apparently so.

18. You think far too highly of the penetrating power of protest.
Way too highly. Lucky if you get a 10 second spot on CNN.

12. this is one of the dumbest nontroversies i've seen in a while
i saw the video of this earlier, and i don't know how anyone could possibly call that mocking. now you might disagree that he wasn't aware of what the protest was about (though there were several groups), he probably did (he's not dumb); but i thought the point of his remarks was very clear. after singling out the "keep your promises" line he went on to say that he finds that sometimes people don't realize just how fast his administration has moved on a lot of things over the last 4 months, relative to previous admins; i took his comments as a pretty clear indication that he's more than aware of what he's promised the gay community, even if he's not moving based on the arbitrary time table that some people have decided to hold him to.
some people wanted him to make a direct statement about about prop 8, and he didn't; but there's no way what he said was an attempt to mock the protesters or gay rights advocates.

We can only pray that the Messiah will take this fools advice.

My evil alter-ego over on the DUmmies board pushes this advice all the time. It either infuriates the left when Zero stays silent, or it will scare the political middle by the 2012 elections.

31. I didn't write "anyone."
Edited on Fri May-29-09 03:05 AM by burning rain
Nor did I suggest it. I strongly support marriage equality, myself. But, if Obama declines to do so, or further temporizes on the issue, I will continue to support him because I can appreciate the political lay of the land even though I don't like it -- and it does make me suspicious when some condemn the president for not taking a course that would put him in an extremely precarious position, politically speaking. It can make me wonder about motives. The lessons of Naderite purism (largely funded by cunning conservatives) should after all still be rather fresh from 2000. I am accustomed to making pragmatic compromises I'd rather avoid in a better world. Alas, I suspect I'll never have the pleasure of casting my presidential ballot for a fellow atheist and will have to continue to settle for professed Christians with more-or-less reasonable views. At best maybe an irreligious candidate dissembling as Christian.

32. Obama is more aware about things than people on internet, he knew there are many in the LA area upse
with him over the Armenian Genocide issue. unlike Bush they don't shield him from any knowledge of protests.
