Inmates finding better chance for parole under Schwarzenegger
Inmates finding better chance for parole under Schwarzenegger

By MICHELLE MORGANTE, Associated Press Writer

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Adam Riojas spent 13 years waiting for freedom.
Convicted in 1991 of a murder he insists he didn't commit, the former real estate agent maintained his innocence despite offers of a plea deal and urgings to express remorse. Then in 2002, relatives told the state parole board they'd heard Riojas' estranged father, a drug dealer and smuggler, confess to the killing shortly before his own death. The board, without any objection from the prosecutors who sent Riojas to prison, granted him parole.

Their recommendation then was sent to Gov. Gray Davis who, having publicly vowed to keep convicted murderers in prison for life, rejected it.

But a year later, after an unexpected change in state leadership, Riojas is free, one of the 31 convicted murderers and kidnappers paroled by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first seven months in office.

That's nearly four times the eight life-term inmates who were granted parole during Davis' 4 1/2 years as governor.

2. Wonder how many drug offenders he has released?
I suppose more violent criminals would be more apt to by his shite back catalog of violence and gore on DVD.

"Harriet Salarno, whose 18-year-old daughter was murdered by an estranged boyfriend in 1979, is worried by Schwarzenegger's record. As president of the advocacy group Crime Victims United of California, she said the state owes more to crime victims and the general public than to violent criminals, "very few" of whom can be reformed."

3. It's probably the sex offenders he's letting out due to his kinship
with their cause to harrass women. So women have a lot to thank the rapenfuhrer for.

4. Hello!!!!
Ca. in its wisdom passed 3 strikes and its life without parole. Gray Davis and the prison guard union loved it! In another time it was called log rolling.
Ca is not only broke but multi-billions in debt. Arnold gets his money elseware. Tighten your belts prison guards, layoffs ahead.

When people won't pay for good government, they only understand when it is too late. At that point, its always something or somebody else that is to blame.(Republican jive)
Good government is never ideology. It is define the goal and get it done. Sometime rewards are slow.
Taxes and good government are the price of civilization.

5. 'Three strikes' was passed long before Davis was elected Governor
CA voters approved it in 1994. Davis was first elected Governor in 1998.

7. as in the case of the women, husband killer, in many cases
it is the right thing to do. Does it matter ? or do we begin the "soft on crime" drumbeat? He needs, as a dope smoker himself, to release all marijuana offenders
