City of Compton Touts Successful ‘Gifts For Guns’ Campaign
COMPTON- More than 250 guns were taken off the streets Saturday as a result of the “Gifts for Guns” program in Compton. It was an effort to curb violent crime in the city, which reportedly has the highest homicide rate in the county. Authorities gave $100 gift cards to people who turned in firearms, redeemable at Circuit City, Ralphs supermarkets and Toys R Us, said Los Angeles Sheriff Deputy Carlos Lopez.

2. Good example of "Ujamaa" or Cooperative Economics
"The Kwanzaa principle of Ujamaa teaches us the practice of shared work and wealth in the world...

And it urges us to maintain a sense of kinship in and with the world and to embrace it as sacred space and thus treat it with the respect it is due as the foundation and framework of our life. "

5. Nice try.
But with tens of thousands of guns in the city already and with many more flooding the city every day 250 guns just isn't shit. Still better then nothing.

6. Two kinds of guns get turned in during these events
1. Guns worth less than whatever is being paid out, often because they are missing parts or are simply non-functional, and

2. Guns that the owner KNOWS FOR A FACT have been used in a crime.

Gun "buy-backs" are photo opportunities for politicians like Lee Baca.
