Hi...I'm a female DUer from Chicago who needs to be in North Hollywood
between Jan. 30 and Feb. 7 for a job training session...I'm looking for an affordable room to share with a woman or a family. I can pay up to $350, depending on the space. It must be within walking distance to a Holiday Inn which is located at 4222 Vineland Ave. in North Hollywood.

Thanks a lot!

1. It sucks that your employer
won't cover this for you! Don't they have to pay, if they want you to attend a training session for work?

2. No, that's actually not quite the situation...It's "educational" training
which, from all I've researched, has many job contacts/offers.

3. I'm a former Chicagoan who lived in North Hollywood for years...
I can't think of a thing that would fit the bill for you other than the Holiday Inn itself. There are no acccomodations near by. Also, if you don't rent a car, you're going to have to walk quite a distance to find a restaurant other than, heaven forbid, the Inn's restaurant. If you were to rent a car, you might find a cheaper room within a reasonable distance. Hollywood itself, however would not be an alternative so don't be confused by the name of the city. It is miles from there, and people often think it's next door. And you would not want to spend much time in Hollywood proper. It's not a safe place. Unless you can find another DUer in that area, it would be difficult to find a room in a private home. I would suggest that you could look into a better room rate. Sometimes, you can get a deal by calling the place directly and asking if they have special discounts or package deals. Auto club discounts, etc. I've done well with that. Do you also know that you can fly into Burbank Airport, instead of the long drive and more crowded LAX? Burbank is the next town over, and the airport is easy to find. Sometimes, its worth checking with the people who run the class your are taking, because there will be other people you could be comfortable sharing a room with.

4. Thanks so much for your information, RadicalMom!...I appreciate it
..It's true..I've only been to LA once, so I don't really know the neighborhood...I'm going to try and negotiate with the Holiday Inn, itself on a discount...As for the car, I know what you're saying...The deal is that the training is also in the Holiday Inn..but I'm pretty sure I'll have to rent a car for a few days, at least...My particular problem come from the fact that though most people are sharing a room and saving money that way..I can't, because via special circumstances, I'm staying only 1 week not two like everybody else...They are supposed to be looking for a former graduate of the program with a spare room to help me out (otherwise I pay twice what everyone else does for a single room...
...Thanks for the tip on the Burbank airport...already made my reservations, which is not so bad, since I got low airfare, at least.

Listen...Thanks again for taking the time to fill me in...I appreciate it.
Just curious...How do you compare living in the LA area to living in Chicago?(I'm originally from the Philly-NJ area myself, but I've been here eight years.)

5. Nary, you could try posting on www.craigslist.com... Los Angeles
or yes, your best bet (and safer) may be to get a room at the H. Inn or try checking online - I think there are probably cheaper motels in that area. Can you share the cost of a room with people that may be training with you?
