Change In Animal Shelter Rule Causes Controversy
Animals Could Spend More Time In Shelter

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A change at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter has angered some rescue groups, many of which are claiming animals are being kept at the shelter too long.

"I don't think it's beneficial to the dogs, the pure breeds or the mixed breeds that are there," Vanneman said.

In years past, the county shelter would hold an animal for four days to allow its owner to claim it. On day five, it was available for adoption, and/or a rescue group could pick it up. Now, the four-day hold is still in place, but after that, the general public has up to five days to adopt the animal, and the rescue groups have to wait more than a week and a half. They argue that's way too long to keep animals at the shelter.

"There are certain dogs that quit eating and just shut down," Vanneman said.
