A class-action lawsuit was filed Monday in Sacramento Superior Court in behalf of more than 1,000 Kaiser Permanente patients who were sent letters last week informing them they might have been exposed to contaminated instruments.
Kenneth Hatke filed the suit in behalf of others who had certain medical procedures done at the HMO's south Sacramento facility. The letters asked patients who had one of the procedures to be tested for hepatitis.
Kaiser spokesperson Cinde Breedlove said hospital officials couldn't comment on the suit because they haven't had a chance to review it.
"Our infectious disease experts have determined there is an extremely low risk to our patients. We believe they should be screened to assure their health is protected," Breedlove said.
