Student admits 'powder' hoax, police say
Incident evacuates middle school, shuts emergency room

Staff reports

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Police say an eighth-grade student at Green Acres Middle School has admitted he is responsible for a “white powder” envelope hoax that created panic at the school Tuesday and at one point closed the waiting room at Kaweah Delta Hospital's emergency department.

Two teachers and two vice principals who may have come in contact with the envelope were taken to a decontamination unit established outside Kaweah Delta Hospital. In addition, five other teachers drove themselves to the hospital and asked to be tested

Alan Landon, a Green Acres teacher, said he noticed the envelope on the ground and picked it up, thinking it was trash.

On the envelope was written “$200,” in pencil, looking like it was written by a student, Landon said. He said it was well sealed, and when he opened it he saw a note inside but when he saw some white power fell out he took it to the school’s office and emergency crews were called.
