Fathers To Get Time Off With Pay For First Time

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A new law is about to take effect in California that will let mothers and, for the first time, fathers take time off from work and still get paid after the birth of their child. But, apparently, few expectant parents have even heard about this law.

A law signed by Gov. Gray Davis in 2002, which goes into affect July 1, will give workers up to six weeks paid time off in order to care for a newborn baby, an adopted child or a sick relative.

"But one study done at a university level found that about 70 percent of those eligible didn't even know about a program like this," said Employment Development Department spokeswoman Loree Levy.

So, the state will soon be launching a $750,000 public awareness campaign, letting people know about the benefits of paid family leave and its limitations.
