The solid citizens in Irv and Selma's living room v. "gay and abortion rights activists?" You decide

" July 27, 2006
By MARK PAZNIOKAS And JON LENDER, Courant Staff Writers WEST HARTFORD -- They filled Irv and Selma Schein's living room, then the dining room. Finally, the overflow snaked up the stairs. They came Wednesday night to hear Hadassah Lieberman urge a strong turnout Aug. 8 for her husband, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman.

State Sen. Jonathan Harris took a turn speaking, then Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez. They used different words, but the message was the same: Ask your friends to turn out for the midsummer Democratic primary, because Lieberman needs them.

A few blocks away, gay and abortion-rights activists had embraced a similar message the previous night on behalf of Lieberman's challenger, Ned Lamont, who has pulled even or ahead of Lieberman in recent polls. With 13 days to go, the campaigns are obsessed with turnout.

....

Marion Steinfels, a spokesman for Lieberman, said the bad polling news seemingly has jolted Lieberman's base into volunteering."

"Volunteering?" Yeah, right! Just like all those hand lettered signs the campaign staff passed out at the Clinton rally represented sincere grass roots support.

1. I felt the article was a bit slanted, too. Lots of commentary
from Lieberman staffers, without a great deal from the Lamont camp.
