Reno throws her support to Castor in U.S. Senate race
By Ken Thomas | The Associated Press
Posted May 22, 2004

WEST PALM BEACH -- At the Cypress Lakes Democratic Club, Janet Reno's introduction brings the audience to their feet -- even an elderly woman with an oxygen tube under her nose rises in applause.

Two years ago, the former U.S. attorney general narrowly lost the Democratic primary for governor. But her star power still sells in the retirement communities that dot the coast of Southeast Florida, where voters admire her independent streak and consider her a bridge to President Clinton.

She is hoping this popularity can help her friend, former state Education Commissioner Betty Castor, win August's U.S. Senate primary.

"People ask me, 'What are you doing these days, Janet?' " Reno told more than 200 party activists Thursday night at the retirement community, where a disco ball hangs from the ceiling of the club house. "And one of the things I tell them is that I'm doing everything I can to see that Betty Castor is elected."
