Two Senate candidates pledge support for businesses if elected
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The two candidates vying to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald both said Tuesday they would make businesses a priority in Washington, though they contrast sharply in specifics and political allegiances.

In their first appearance on the same stage since winning their parties' nominations in March, Republican Jack Ryan and Democrat Barack Obama appealed for support from about 250 manufacturers and retailers gathered at the state Capitol to lobby lawmakers.

Ryan, 44, a Chicago investment banker turned teacher, pitched his support for ideas that go over well with businesses - cutting back taxes and government regulations that interfere with the free market. He also advocated for improved health care, education and public safety.

"We can make Illinois freer, fairer and safer," Ryan said.
