Chicago Tribune

Published May 9, 2004

Longtime Chicago TV journalist Walter Jacobson was arrested and charged with drunken driving early Saturday, police said.

Jacobson, 66, was seen "stumbling" out of a Lincoln Park pizza shop about 12:45 a.m. when a police officer warned him not to get into his car, police spokeswoman Josephine Del Rio said.

"He entered the vehicle anyway," Del Rio said.

The anchorman--who has worked at WFLD-Ch. 32 since 1993, according to the station's Web site--drove north on Lincoln Avenue with police closely following. Jacobson then drove through a stop sign at Geneva Terrace, Del Rio said. The officer then pulled him over, impounded his car and performed a sobriety test, the results of which police are not releasing.

1. OK I was going to defend him
because those kinds of things can happen to good people, but good God when a cop tells you not to drive on your way to your car, that's just dumb.

2. I'll never understand why "celebs" don't take cabs
This guy probably has plenty of bucks for a $20 cab fare but has such poor judgement that will now cost him much more.

BTW - a 66 year old a a Faux News station? Here in Seattle our Faux News station (13) is definitely going for the yuppie market - seems like their entire staff is mid forties or less.

4. Walter has become a Chicago institution
He used to be teamed on local CBS news with Bill Kurtis, who now has his own production company and is probably best known for A&E's American Justice series. That was back in the 70s. Jacobsen is Faux's senior, senior anchor and I think they believe he lends credibility to their newscasts. I wouldn't know. I watch WGN for local news.

BTW, he didn't even need twenty bucks. The restaurant was less than a mile from his residence and he was stopped just a few blocks from home. I guess that's why he thought he could make it.

3. Put it in Perspective...
In the same year that 3000 people died at the WTC at the hands of terrorists, 18,000 people died at the hands of drunk drivers.

That makes this guy six times more dangerous than a terrorist.

6. I've always taken Walter to be a fairly progressive type of guy,
maybe I'm wrong, but even the best of us make dumb decisions.

Really, I don't look down at WFLD like I do Foxnews, two different entities.

7. Agreed
WFLD is certainly not as wacko as FAUX News or News Corporation. I would dare call them "non-wackos"

9. I recently saw Walter do an anti-Kerry rant
that was worthy of any Faux national Wingnut. I wondered then, if his job was in trouble.
